LOWES HOME IMPROVEMENT STORES - all stores now use the term "Christmas Trees" (tell us your stories)
Lowes Corporate HQ | 11-29-05 | dfu

Posted on 11/29/2005 9:41:21 AM PST by doug from upland

There have been reports from around the country about stores being afraid to say "Merry Christmas" and using the term "Holiday Trees" rather than "Christmas trees."

One giant retailer has solved the problem. Lowes home improvement stores caused a controversy with a sign in their parking lot advertising Christmas trees in Spanish and Holiday trees in English. A Tulsa, OK radio station outed the local Lowes in Tulsa.

According to a woman with whom I just spoke at Lowes customer service HQ, the controversy has been solved. She told me that they were called Christmas trees inside the store. They have corrected the situation. At every Lowes store in the country, they will proudly display their Christmas trees for sale inside and outside the store.

Please share your stories on this thread regarding stores that are still willing to call the "holiday season" what it is --- CHRISTMAS! I would prefer to shop at those stores.

NOTE: I pulled a previous thread that turned into a flame war. It finally got pulled when a FReeper found it necessary to tell an absolute lie about me. I referenced a Clinton limerick book I wrote about nine years ago that has been out of print for seven years. He accused me of not answering a question and, instead, plugging my new book. On this thread, in the spirit of the "Christmas" season, please share with us the businesses that are not afraid of Christmas, and those that have surrendered to the leftists in the culture war. If this is not important to you at all, that is just fine. Please, don't turn this thread into flames. Thanks, and Merry Christmas. And Happy Hanukkah to some of you.

Why can't they just call them Christmas Trees?

A caller to Bill Handel's Los Angeles show on KFI called this morning to share what happened at her work. It is a large private company with thousands of employees. The Health and Human Services department announced a door decorating contests. That sounds like the spirit, right? Well, perhaps not. None of the decoration could mention Christmas.

They must have heard from some of the public who are sick of this PC nonsense. Apparently, some people think it is offensive to use the term "Christmas."

It was brought up on Fox News recently that if someone wants to buy a holiday tree stand at Lowe's, they can't. Lowe's only sells Christmas tree stands.

Then why bother. We're celebrating Christmas, not anything else. Why even bother having a decorating contest if you're not going to call it what it is.

Doh. I just saw it and asked the Admin Mod to correct the spelling. Sometimes I find this difficult to do while listening to two talk shows. Rush and Prager are on now.

We are in the middle of our second Civil War. This one is over the culture. I read last year about a school that would only allow white plates for "holiday" parties. No red or green. And I don't know if there are any public schools left that allow Christmas songs to be sung in school that have a reference to Christ.

I hope we have better luck with this thread. I spoke with some in Speaker Hastert's office a short time ago and am waiting for the details of Hastert's directive to the Architect of the Capitol to once again call it the Capitol Christmas Tree. Clinton changed it to holiday tree.

Honestly, the cross is the only "holiday tree" that really matters.

I appreciate the sage comment. Many have forgotten the "reason for the season." What also matters to me is the loss of tradition and culture and the assault by the leftists.

If they don't want to call it by its true name, (look it up in the dictionary or encyclopedia), they might as well call it an umbrella.

I almost forgot. The spokesperson from Lowes told me that in 2006 they will also be called Christmas trees.

I'm kind of annoyed with Honda. It has an ad running with a group of carolers singing "we wish you a happy Honda-day," to the tune of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." When I saw it the first time, I was sure they were singing "we wish you a happy holiday," and I was furious at this bastardization of a great traditional Christmas carol. On later viewings, I did find that they are actually singing "Honda-day" but I still don't like the use of the song and I'm sure others hear it the same way I did the first time.

I am one Jewish guy who is annoyed with this Holiday Tree biz. It is a Christmas Tree, darn it!. :) The tree is not a Holiday Bush, not a Holiday Tree, but a Christmas Tree. I don't celebrate Christmas but perhaps enjoy enjoy the spirit of the season, joy, happiness and good will to all people. My beliefs are different but don't to deprive those who do celebrate Christmas, I want people to have joy in life. Hopefully they don't start calling my Menorah a Public Light Display Device or giant Candelabra. The anti_Christmas / Atheist etc have no joy in life and very miserable, they want everyone else to be just as miserable as they are, Have no tree with bright lights, Have no Menorah with Bright Candles, they just want brown dirt on the ground or a grey sidewalk or perhaps just brown snow where beauty and symbols of true peace plus symbols of Peace and anti-tyrany can stand.

“Happy Holidays,” “Murder, Inc.,” sex in the classroom (yawn), &c.

You may recall that I ended my previous Impromptus with, "Don't even get me started on 'Happy Holidays.'" Yes, it's that time of year again, when "Merry Christmas" seems practically verboten, and everything is "holiday," "holiday," "holiday." The Capitol Hill Christmas tree is officially called the Capitol Hill Holiday Tree. Gag me with a spoon, as people used to say, way back when.

A reader sent me something treasurable, and typical. He quoted a memorandum of his company, which said, "[Company X] observes the following holidays." Listed then were "New Year's Day," "Presidents' Day," "Memorial Day," "July 4th/Independence Day," "Labor Day," "Thanksgiving and the Day After," and, get this, "December 25th." The company couldn't bring itself to utter the C-word. Maybe they thought it was unconstitutional or something. We're lucky that they actually said "Thanksgiving," as I have noticed — and remarked in Impromptus — that Thanksgiving is being replaced by "holiday," too.

Would you do me a favor, readers? If you have an interesting story regarding "holiday" and "Christmas" and the like, would you e-mail me — at jnordlinger@nationalreview.com — to tell me about it? I'd like to do a little compilation.

Bless you, and happy holidays (just kidding).

Good words, Stu. May you and your family have a blessed Hanukkah. You mean it's not a "Public Light Display?" :)
