Talking politics and stardom with John Cusack
chicago tribune ^ | 11/28/05

"But he gets just as jazzed talking about politics, journalism and Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show." That show, in fact, is central to a blog entry he posted earlier this month on The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-cusack/), one in which he excoriates the Democrats for not assuming moral leadership in light of the Bush administration's actions as "criminally incompetent robber barons now raiding the present and future." "

"On being attacked from the right as a Hollywood liberal: "So maybe I'm smug, and maybe the Democrats are petty. Maybe you're right. But you're ordering people to their deaths. How are those two things comparable?""

In Hollywood, like many other places where wealth and fame are at stake, people do whatever it takes to succeed, which usually involves kissing butts and screwing people. In Hollywood, it's required both figuratively and literally. What's also required is subscribing to a certain political perspective. In a profession where selling out is mandatory, why are we always so surprised? Take heart; these people are no more sincere in their politics than they are in their morality. It's ALL fluff.

John Stewart is the anti-hero of the LW media shysters. He's "truthful and "balanced" according the media whores who feel they have been neutral in covering the Iraq War.

Yes, there is a difference between the McCain/Hagel Repubs and the neo-con/White House Iraq Group lunatics. But it's also good to remember: no matter what he does from here on out, McCain stood by the president, a man (and his machine) who smeared him viciously on the 2000 campaign trail, and then, at the GOP convention four years later, campaigned for him when we were well on to this disastrous course.

This is an interesting point, but not about Cusack.

A lot of McCain supporters, and McCain himself, think his "moderate" stance will appeal to the left and the media in 2008. However, the left/media--which supports him now simply because he's a thorn in Bush's side--will turn on him a heartbeat if he actually wins the nomination.

These are some real knee-jerk responses from FReepers.

We should listen to what John Cusack has to say for three reasons:

(1) He's extremely knowledgeable. Very few American celebrities can claim, like Cusack, to have actually completed a single semester of college before dropping out.

(2) He is a serious artist. He has had the courage to go up against the grain and do films that really make you think - like Serendipity, One Crazy Summer and Must Love Dogs.

(3) He agreed to take one for the team and star in the only John Grisham movie (including Christmas With The Kranks!) to completely flop at the box office.

Liberals, like that idiot Cusack, think Jon Stewart is a real journalist and "tells the truth". That is so laughable. Can someone tell me what channel his show is on?

This weekend on Fox News Watch that nutbar Neal Gabler said the same thing about Jon Stewart. And this is a guy who takes his work seriously? Jim Pinkerton said it best that his show is a hit among 18-24 year old but at some time its time to grow up.

You are correct-amundo!
They will turn on him faster than you can say "Washington Post Style Section".
Though he may be the only thing standing between Hillary and the White House.

Liberals can't grow up when history begins for them when they wake up in the morning.

I guess that answers my "Who's John Cusack?" question. Still, I'm going to have to do a search to see what he was in. The name sounds familiar, but I can't quite place him.

journalism and Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show." Things that do not belong in the same sentence?

I'll have to take your word for it. In looking at his filmography, I found that I have not seen any of his movies, except for a few minutes of Con Air as I'm zapping through TV channels. I would have seen him had he accepted a role in Apollo 13. Good movie. I guess it was too pro-USA for him.

The source for the word "cryptofascist" is, I believe, the now-defunct (but still hilarious) British comedy show, 'Red Dwarf', from the episode where the Dave Lister character encounters his younger, rock star-wannabe self, who tended to describe virtually everything as 'cryptofacist'. Maybe Cusack will next turn to that other great Brit comedy, 'Absolutely Fabulous' for inspiration. The possibilities boggle the mind.

You are right! Jimmy Stewart is from my hometown, btw. This time of year is very big, and the town gets lit up like "It's a Wonderful Life." I was watching "Mary Poppins" the other day with my children and was wondering what happened to the multi-talented stars that seemed to be so plentiful back then. I am not sure if that was worded properly, but I know what I mean in my head. :) Catherine Zeta Jones can sing and dance, there are a few, but it isn't like it used to be. You are right about the quality of stars and movies, but I think they just make movies more shallow because the audience is mostly there for the big explosions, etc. Oh well.
