US forges trail-blazing UN condemnation of Hizbullah

Following intense US pressure, the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday issued an unprecedented condemnation of Monday's Hizbullah attacks on northern Israel.

This condemnation - slamming Hizbullah by name for "acts of hatred" - marked the first time the Security Council has ever reprimanded Hizbullah for cross-border attacks on Israel. The condemnation followed by two days a failed attempt to get a condemnation issued on Monday, the day of the attack, when Algeria came out against any mention of Hizbullah in the statement.

When asked what changed from Monday to Wednesday, one diplomatic official replied: "John Bolton," a reference to the US ambassador to the UN. Bolton lobbied vigorously for the passage of the statement.

The condemnation expressed "deep concern" over the attack, and called on Lebanon to exercise its sovereignty and authority in the south according to relevant Security Council resolutions.

Security Council Resolution 1559, which led to the withdrawal earlier this year of Syrian troops from Lebanon, also calls for the dismantling of the militias in the country, as well as a call to the Lebanese government to extend its control over the entire country, including the Hizbullah dominated south.

Israeli officials expressed satisfaction that the statement did not include any attempt to "balance it," referring to Israel's response to the Hizbullah attack, and that for the first time ever it placed full responsibility for the violence on Hizbullah's shoulders.

Roni Leshno Ya'ar, the Foreign Ministry's deputy director- general who heads its UN and international organizations division, termed the condemnation a "Security Council warning to Hizbullah to stop its provocations on the northern border."

Leshno Ya'ar said this type of condemnation was significant because Hizbullah was "very sensitive" to public opinion, both in Lebanon and abroad. He said the condemnation sent a strong signal that the Security Council was demonstrating "no tolerance toward terrorism."

The statement against Hizbullah came just a few weeks after the Security Council condemned Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his call to wipe Israel off the map. That was also a precedent-setting condemnation, marking the first time the UN body ever condemned an Islamic state for statements against Israel.

Kudos to the Bush administration for standing up to the terrorists (Hizbullah) and the French on this. Maybe change is possible at the U.N.

When asked what changed from Monday to Wednesday, one diplomatic official replied: "John Bolton,"

The anti-Semite democrats blocked his confirmation but the Jewish vote will, largely, remain with the liberals.

Almost every major Jewish group in America, including normally leftist ones, strongly supported the Bolton nomination, largely because of his work to get the infamous U.N. "Zionism is Racism" resolution repealed.

Most Democrats aren't any more anti-Semitic than anyone else IME. Cynthia McKinney and Fritz Hollings are exceptions, not the rule. OTOH, the far left and many Democratic activists are most definitely anti-Semites. They don't generally get elected, though.

No wonder the Democrats opposed Bolton. He's not a terrorist coddler like they are.

Voting against Mr. Bolton does not make one an anti-Semite, does it? Anyway, I have some liberal family in the States and they all thought the Democrats had it wrong about Bolton.

Many who voted against Bolton have otherwise very solid pro-Israel voting records. I think support for Israel is one of the few places John Kerry didn't flip flop and did get it right, as an example. Charles Shumer would be another good example.

No, this isn't an endorsement of any Democratic politicians. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I am so tired of Israel running our foreign policy. Just bring the few Jews who who live in Israel to live with the rest of the Jews in New York City and let the Muzlims have Israel. It will soon go back to the desert.

You know that there are 5 million Jews in Israel, the majority of non-European descent, notably from the Moslem countries?

So pushing through a resolution that denounces anm Islamist Terrorist group is letting Israel run our foreign policy. Silly me. I thought we were at war with Islamists terrorists.

The 5.1 million Jews in Israel would not want to leave. Besides, even if they did, we would still have problems with Muslims, who wish to conquer the world.

85% of Israel's 6 million people are Jewish. Quite a bit more than just a few. To make them leave Israel would be letting the islamists win.

The US and Israel are fighting the same type of enemy. I am personally tired of our politicians calling for Israel to concede and pull back every time the terrorists attack them.

According to the Presbyterian Church, Hezbollah is a bunch of sweetie pies because they pass out band-aids and pretty much limit their murdering to Jews.

rmlew: 5.3 million according to the last census. Israel now has the world's largest Jewish population, larger than all of the U.S. Jewish population.

R.W.Ratikal: Jews are from Judea. That's where the name comes from. Where is Judea? In Israel, of course. So, you want to remove the entire native population of a friendly nation, is that it? You want to give our land to the enemies of the United States?

Oh, and if we ran American foreign policy I doubt we'd put so much pressure for concessions on ourself.

Save your anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic rants. They won't be popular on Free Republic.
