MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Harley-Davidson Inc. issued a voluntary safety recall on 2006 model Dyna series motorcycles built between June 9 and Oct. 19 due to a transmission defect.
The company said late Tuesday the recall affects some 13,400 motorcycles and is expected to cost less than $5 million, which it will make reservations for in the fourth quarter.
Harley-Davidson also said it expects to meet its previously announced wholesale shipment target of 329,000 motorcycles for 2005.
The Milwaukee-based company said it will provide owners with free pickup and delivery and will make recall kits, which include three redesigned transmission components, available at dealerships starting the week of Dec. 12.
The defect may allow the motorcycles to go into a false neutral position even though the neutral indicator light is illuminated, it said.
"If that happens, the transmission could engage into first or second gear unexpectedly," Harley-Davidson spokesman Bob Klein said Wednesday.
Two accidents related to the problem were reported, but none resulted in injury, Klein said.
The defect resulted from a design flaw in the six-speed transmission, which replaced the five-speed on the Dyna to make for a smoother ride at highway speeds and increase fuel efficiency, Klein said.
The redesign also resulted in a change to the front forks, chassis and a wider rear tire.
Shipments of the 2006 Dyna had been delayed but resumed after a change to production, he said.
Harley-Davidson shares rose $1.20, or 2.2 percent, to $55.67 in Wednesday afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, amid a general gain in market prices on optimism over consumer spending this holiday season.

Actually, liquid cooling on bikes has a history that goes back at least 50 years, possibly longer, although it didn't become common until the Japanese started using it, as you said.
And I guarantee you I know way more about Harley-type bikes than you do about Japanese bikes.
At full throttle most of those big cubic-inch v-twins would overheat in less than a minute. Of course, the GSXR1000 couldn't run at its HP peak forever either, without overheating, but it could run near it all day.

You are so far out of your league at this point it is pointless. How did you come to the conclusion that you have to reach your torque peak or hp peak with the throttle is wide open? Do you even understand how they are produced?

I could and I would do it with a less than 100ci motor. In fact I have a 77shovelhead sitting at my shop that I would be willing to be would beat out the 1000supersport. I will admit though I turned the 4speed tranny into a 5speed by taking the tranny out of an old gpz and machining them to work in the 4speed. It's also naturally aspirated. Hell it's one of the worst motors designed by Harley and it has been getting raced for about 20years now. Again I don't think you really know what you are talking about, which is no problem but you spend a lot of time badmouthing the Harleys where it's obvious from your posts you know every little if anything about how a motor actually works and produces power.

I haven't even mentioned what kind of bike I have. You would undoubtedly call it a plastic-covered rice rocket, or crotch rocket, or some such, since you Harley types seem to feel the need to label everything Japanese with some dismissive label. Maybe you're the insecure ones.
And you're the one claiming that Harleys (and similar) are the end-all and be-all of motorcycling, but when it comes to performance they excel in only narrow categories.

OK, stop talking trash and talk numbers. What kind of 1/4 mile time can it lay down? Although now you're talking about purpose-built drag bikes, so I guess I should be able to compare it to Japanese bikes with streched swing arms and other drag strip optimizations.
I think you're full of it, just like most Harley types whose sense of the performance of their bikes seems to be purely based in fantasy.

No I said less than 100ci. In fact if you had been paying attention I mentioned a shovelhead which is much smaller than 100ci. My 96s&s will smoke it too though.

Do you? No, really. I've never seen a HP run done on a dyno at anything other than wide-open throttle, nor have I ever heard of any gasoline-buring IC engine that makes its HP peak at anything other than wide open throttle.
Nope not a purpose built drag bike at all. On bad pavement two weeks ago it rolled in the low 9's. You can think I am full of it your posts already showed you have no idea what you are talking about, so if this makes you feel better knock yourself out.
