Everything you need to know is here.
Will slink away and work on the self control.....(country ham...DON'T DROOL!...country ham....DO NOT DROOL!
YOu were so right about the ham. It's ok, but as my husband said this morning when he tasted it, "This will be good for sandwiches."
Lesson learned. :-)
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving Day and welcome to Free Republic.
I especially loved Thanksgiving at my Aunt's house, where her, my grandmother, and ggmother would bake and bake. It was soooooo wonderful.
I'll be there one day.
Thanks for the welcome.
He was right on about the ham.
Everything else turned out well, except the "I'm winging it" squash casserole.
My thanks to you!
got any good venison recipes? I'm fairly new to this deer hunting and not at all sure what to do with it once I take it out of the freezer.
It is one of our favorites.. Yesterday was fantastic, dinner lasted 2 hours..
However, now I'll have to walk to Chicago from Houston and back, to knock off the pumpkin pudding with heavy whipped cream.. I'll take my dog Zeke, for that long walk with me, he ate too many leftovers as well ..LOLOL
Thanks Carlo for your encouraging reply. I was all set to give up on Thanksgiving cooking!!
Hams do awful in the crockpot. Never "wing it" for squash casserole, and never have squash casserole when you are having chicken and dressing, it's just too much bread.
The good news is that I almost replicated my late grandmother's chicken and dressing. It tasted great, but it wasn't quite fluffy enough.
Any suggestions?
I used one pan of cornbread, 2 pieces of white bread, a few crackers, 1 egg, celery, onions and chicken broth. I seasned it with sage and other assorted spices.
It was nice and moist
My bet is that your cornbread was too fresh, and cracker crumbs tend to tighten up any recipe.. This wasn't you fault, both of the suggestions came from my own personal screw-ups.. LOL
Try this next time..
Crumble corn bread and biscuits in large bowl. Add chicken broth and mix well. Let stand about 10 minutes. Add eggs and milk, stir well. Add sage, salt and pepper and onions. Pour in shallow pan. Bake at 400 degrees until brown.
- 1 lg. cake corn bread
- 8 can biscuits
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 c. can milk
- 3 c. chopped onions
- 3 tbsp. rubbed sage
- Salt, pepper to taste
- 2 qts. chicken broth
Tried any of those? I was in England about a month ago and had some venison sausage at a very fine restraunt. It was wonderful.
When I have been called upon to cook Venison, it was easy and delicious.. Just my general knowledge of cooking and checking those linked recipes, tells me they are very credible and compatible within ingredient integration guidelines and gastronomical interaction.. Hahaha
Only one of the linked recipes that looks especially familiar, and that was the chili.. burp.. :)
I'm in a rather large extended family where all the men (and some of the women too) hunt deer. I've taken one and it's mostly still in the freezer 'cause I don't know how to fix it. I'm just a bit leery of it to be honest. Those recipes look like they would work so I'll try a few and let you know.
I did go hunting this morning. Saw two does but they just 'flirted' with me. They were about 30 yards away behind some trees. Never could get a clear shot. I do mean 'flirted'. They would look around a tree straight at me and then go back behind the tree. After about two minutes they moved on off. I guess they knew something wasn't quite right but couldn't quite figure it out. They just never came out for a clear shot and I'm not into trailing wounded deer. Either it's a guaranteed shot or I don't take it.
Woo Hoo .. Somehow, I just can't get that visual out of my mind... Bwhahahahahahahah
Thanks very much for that dressing recipe, and you are right, I had just made the cord bread that morning.
Thanks again so much!!!
