My 14 year old son has been given a project to design a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Iraq war. It must be designed as though it will be built on the Mall in Washington D.C. which means it must follow the same design restrictions that applied to the Vietnam Memorial. It must Honor the memory of those who served and those who gave their lives. Be harmonious with the Mall and its surroundings. Somehow fit into the "historic continuity" of American art. Be durable, buildable and not hard to maintain. Please , any ideas would be appreciated.
Your son should thoroughly research the reasons leading up to the war and the justification for the war so that he can defend any decisions he makes. When he understands WHY we needed to go to war with Hussein, he will be able to design a thoughtful and meaningful ( at least to him ) monument
IMO these teachers are instigators. They come back to the schools from the universities carrying a bunch of baggage, then try to get the kids to carry it for them.
It should also show that they are freeing millions of people. Good luck.
A soldier with his rifle on guard, while another behind him holds a small Iraqi girl(or hands something to a child).
Bronze.
The best way to achieve peace is by vanquishing your enemy on the battle field.
How about the feet of the Saddam statue that were left standing when they pulled the rest of the thing down?
I refer you to my idea. ;)
Typical liberal. Cant put aside politics about the war to honor those who are brave enough to defend our freedom. While im sure those who have fought wouldn't think this, i dont think she deserves to be called an American along with our brave soldiers.
I'd suggest avoiding crescents as part of the design...
That would be very nice.
Suggestion: Let your son do his own assignment.
Wanna really make trouble? Have two soldiers, one black and one white, comforting an Iraqi boy and girl. Behind the soldiers, an angel. the inscription on the base of the monument reads, "Free at Last".
The Russians build awesome war memorials. Probably too awesome for public school.
Maybe handing a book to a child.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself".-- John Stuart Mill
That should be the words below the monument. My favorite quote. But I want my son to come to that conclusion on his own. By being an educated student who knows that life is not in the gray areas. It is black and white. Right or wrong.
A "Wall of Pictures" Pictures of the soldiers playing soccer with the Iraqi kids etc...The Purple finger...
ROTFL. I like you.
"A soldier with his rifle on guard, "
Nope. The kid would be expelled for a facimile of a gun.
Alternatively, a soldier with his rifle slung on his back walking, hand in hand, with a small child. Should be designed on an east/west basis, so that depending on the time of day, the sun is either directly behind or in front of the statue.
