Criminal Probe Set for New Orleans Levees

NEW ORLEANS - Federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into the levee failures that swamped New Orleans, looking into the possibility of corruption in the design, construction and maintenance of the flood barriers.

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said Wednesday that his office began the investigation the week after Hurricane Katrina.

"The scope of our interest is very broad," he said.

He said some officials were found to have undisclosed conflicts of interest, and "we're extremely concerned about those." He would not give details.

James Bernazzani, FBI agent in charge in New Orleans, said agents have received numerous tips about possible malfeasance.

Other investigations are being conducted by Louisiana's attorney general, who is looking into whether poor construction or design flaws played a role in the failures, and the New Orleans district attorney, who raised the possibility that faulty materials were used in the floodwalls.

Lots of technical details as well as financial details. Jeffers did an outstanding piece of research - or pieces of research, as the material covers many bases.

Will the DA show the levee going "back and to the left" repeatedly?

Lets jail a couple of engineers... that's the ticket.

So many bad decisions have been made over the years, and so many funds wasted, and so many politicians are involved, that a true investigation that could yield instructive results useful in the future is well nigh impossible.

This is ridiculous. The levees were known to be designed to withstand only a cat-3 hurricane. Katrina was a strong cat-4.

To quote Michel from Gilmore Girls: "People are particularly stupid today--I can't talk to any more of them."

Nothing like wasting a boat-load MORE taxpayer money. Some lawyer must need a new Ferrari.

Nothing new here - the government says build it, it displays many problems and gets built anyway because not building it or going to the humongous expense of doing it right are not options. Now, they want any heads, except the heads of those who made sure it had to get done, even if wrong, roll.

I think Jesse Jackson arranged for the breaching of the levees.
He saw that the hurricane didn't tear up NO as badly as he had hoped and was afraid his moment of glory, bad poetry and overall gum-flapping had passed.

No, the effects of Katrina on New Orleans were no greater than an average Cat-3 hurricane.

The levies should have held. Turns out Bush was right when he said nobody expected them to fail. When they saw the hurricane weaken, and go to the east (putting NO on the correct side), it was assumed the levies would hold.

Then they broke, because they were not built correctly. People died because of the malfeasance of someone, probably politicians in New Orleans, the Levy board, and corrupt companies working on fat contracts from their buddies in politics, with union workers.

Seriously, this is the big story that MSM has been trying to supress as long as it could because it doesn't play into the "Bush killed the blacks" theme.

I've been saying all along (because I read it) that something was horribly wrong when a wall just falls over when it isn't overrun -- like happened on the one canal.

There's lots of rat skeletons in the closet. It won't be so easy to point the blame at just one person. There are lots of blame to go around. Read Rising Tide for a good background on this whole mess.
