OGUNQUIT, Maine --Voters in this seaside town on Tuesday became the latest community to ban so-called "formula" restaurants.
Supporters of the chain restaurant ban put the measure on the ballot because they didn't want their town to turn into just another congested strip of Dunkin' Donuts, Subways, Applebee's and Burger Kings.
The measure, which was approved 506-207, prohibits formula restaurants, defined as establishments with the same name, employee uniforms, color schemes, architectural design, signage, or similar standardized features as another restaurant regardless of location or ownership.

Haven eating in restaurants in small towns many times and regretting it the next day, I prefer dining in chain establishments when I'm travelling. It's a lot safer.
I'vd been in this town. I would imagine a ban on gays would not go over well.

Well, next time I am in Sling s@#t Maine, I will be sure to carry a box lunch.
No surprise. It's Ogunquit, Poofter Central.
Q: What do you do if you drop a quarter in Ogunquit?
A: Kick it to Kennybunkport, then bend over and pick it up.
food nazis
I thought there was a chain in Ogunquit. Many stores have Rainbow Flags in front. They will have to be taken down.
How is that socialism if they had a democratic vote?
All kidding aside. The Candy Store in Ogunquit is the best there is. We always stop there on the way back from Biddeford Pool.
These people have too much time on their hands. Next they will want restaurants in their town to be maned "Restaurant Number One."
Get a life!
Has to be some conflict of commerce laws. "You can't exist".
Call their town fascist.

Fascism
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
Oppressive, dictatorial control.
I've always believed - and certain the Founding Fathers did - that local communities retain a broad authority to order their society. If we believe that communities have the right to, say, ban pornography or juice bars, they certainly have the right to zone out businesses they don't want.
No doubt local restaurants are pleased to benefit from this move. And no doubt the town has sacrificed some jobs and economic growth - "stupid," possibly, as I said. But I'd far rather local communities indulge in this kind of thing, rather than have the state or federal governments impose it on all of us. It's far easier to move out of the town or avoid it.
What kind of town is it that doesn't believe in "choice"?
So customers WANT something else than the town provides (or can afford to offer at competitive prices). And business owners are willing to step in and meet that market demand (until it was outlawed).
I wonder if they will ban Victoria's Secret, The Gap, Express and Sears Roebuck too?
Even if the measure was approved by the public, you would find challenges to any law that banned abortion clinics in town.
How about a ban on Wal-Marts? Or foreign owned newspapers?
Maybe... I wonder however what the obesity stats are there??
