Maine town approves ordinance to ban chain restaurants

OGUNQUIT, Maine --Voters in this seaside town on Tuesday became the latest community to ban so-called "formula" restaurants.

Supporters of the chain restaurant ban put the measure on the ballot because they didn't want their town to turn into just another congested strip of Dunkin' Donuts, Subways, Applebee's and Burger Kings.

The measure, which was approved 506-207, prohibits formula restaurants, defined as establishments with the same name, employee uniforms, color schemes, architectural design, signage, or similar standardized features as another restaurant regardless of location or ownership.

You haven't lived until you've eaten at the Pig diner in Pig, Kentucky.

We do not live in a 100% democracy. The mob does not rule and cannot enforce some things they want.

Same sex sodomy was illegal by the will of the legislature. No serious effort was ever made to overturn the law by repeal. Put it to a vote and the public would probably support its continuation. The Supreme Court decided that it is not something for the majority to decide.

Do people really avoid seeing live music because they can't have a smoke? Do they really start cooking more at home?

In a word, yes.

About 2 years ago I ran into a guy here in Virginia that seemed very familiar to me. It turns out that he was a member of a band that I used to enjoy hearing when I still lived in Delaware. We got talking and the Delaware smoking ban came up in our conversation. He was explaining how his group had completely stopped doing gigs in Delaware because the money wasn't there anymore.

The smoking ban had cut cut the crowds at the places they previously played by so much that the owners wouldn't, actually couldn't, pay what they had being paying in the past. In fact a number of places I used to frequent have cut out all live entertainment because of the ban.

I understand your point about taking up space in a restaurant, but I see it very differently for bars.

As I said in my first post, I actually find this appalling, but I can't muster much sypathy for the chains.

Let's get it over with and let Maine become the newest Canandian maritime province

They will welcome being a parasite on the productive province of Alberta.

I would imagine anything in the chain store group such as Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks which are not that large of stores individually versus large block store like Walmart.

Hmmmm does that mean Exxon, Mobile, Hess, and other chain gas stations too? or is it a pick and choose scenario against restaurants?

"I've found that male homos are perhaps the most condescending, elitist bunch of snobs anywhere."

Exactly! That is why it is not surprising that they voted to keep out affordable food. Plus the facts that the Swishers own the restaurants, and that Maine is the most business un-friendly place in America.

Socialism, plain and simple.

Ummm, no. Socialism is where the govt. owns the businesses. When the govt. severely regulates and controls privately owned business, it's called Fascism.

Fun thing to do is to drive by local establishments at lunch or dinner time and note which ones are filled up... then visit them. Usually, if its popular with the locals, its pretty good.

Remember to make certain that its the sort o' locals you want to associate with, though... Biker bars might be poplular, but I just not up to visitin' one.

I should've used the /sarcasm tag.

It's near Mammoth Cave. My cousins raved about it. They bragged about the best barbecue and pulled pork in the state. Oh, jimminy. Was that an experience.

The cook flew into a rage and walked out the door while we were there. One of my cousins got up and bussed the tables while the poor waitress cried and fixed our lunches. The pork was good, but I was starving by the time we finally got fed.

Maine has some towns that are so liberal you just don't want to stop your car. One small town in particular cannot keep their shelves stocked for munchies during the pot harvest season. Ogunquit, is a town that is centered around the arts.

Unless you live there, I can't imagine why any of us here really care what this little town does.

I don't know that there's actually a law in Sharpsburg, Md., (home of the Antietam Civil War battlefield), keeping fast food or chain places, but there aren't any. I think it's a relief, especially when you compare it to the commercialism of place like Gettysburg (which also has a great battlefield).

In hindsight, I agree with TChris that this is probably more like Fascism.

Ummm, no. Socialism is where the govt. owns the businesses. When the govt. severely regulates and controls privately owned business, it's called Fascism.

I was thinking Socialism because they want to limit the success of business in this town so that everyone is equal and block out anyone who has risen above the predefined level of acceptance.
