Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act By Doug Halonen

If the industry doesn't take significant steps to make it easier for parents to control what their children view on television, Congress will step in and legislate. That was a warning shot fired by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in a speech Wednesday in Washington.

Story continues below...

"The amount of questionable content spilling across our screens is growing by the year," Sen. Obama said at a press conference to release a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation that says the number of sex scenes on TV has been increasing dramatically over the past several years.

"Once again, we find ourselves asking those in charge to serve the needs of a nation that has a higher calling than simply peddling indecency and materialism for profit," the senator said.

The study, which examined a representative example of broadcast and cable TV network shows, said that 70 percent of programs included some sexual content this year (with an average of five sex scenes per hour), while only 56 percent did so in 1998 (with 3.2 sex scenes per hour). Among shows that had sexual content, the study said, 14 percent this year included a reference to sexual risks or responsibilities, up from 9 percent in 1998.

But Sen. Obama said he is particularly concerned about the impact television is having on the ability of parents to instill positive values in their children. "Raising your children this way has become exceedingly difficult in a mass media culture that saturates our airwaves with a steady stream of sex, violence and materialism," he said.

Just great. LEFTIST morality police. It actually fits together better. Big government, combined with the mentality that you cannot look after yourself, so the nanny state needs to do it for you.

Maybe if they start burning T.V.'s in France we may see something about the jihad over there now that Obama Osama has spoken the holy words of the evil infidel television problem. We must have won the war and I missed it.

Well, now that I have been thoroughly lectured on this subject by you, allow me to say (if it's ok?), that I believe it is my responsibility to take care of my own children. The government should have a minimal role in how I raise them. Since you must know I rarely allowed my children to watch TV. That was my choice.

30 or 40? Excuse me? How old would that make me? You assume facts not in evidence.

I agree with him and I don't apologize for it.

I wasn't able to watch my children 24 hours a day since I had to work. I don't think it's asking too much for media to use some common sense and responsibility.

And remove the TVs from your children's friends' homes and from relatives' homes and do not let children watch TV when you aren't there with them.

Then get rid of the TV. What good is one anyway? Instead you want the government to babysit your kids?

So your kids friends parents aren't responsible for monitoring their own kids tv viewing. And you let them go over there?

Didn't Algore pull the same stunt with the music industry?

My kids are grown now so it's really not a problem. But I didn't keep my kids locked in the house day and night. They had friends and friends had TVs. I didn't need the government to raise my kids but allowing some of the smut that passes for entertainment these days is not helping parents instill values. Do you really think sex and violence on TV is a good thing for kids?

I'd bet that Obama is related to Achmed-Bin-Saddahm-Hussein Mohammud-Obama.

And he dialed 1-900-KENNEDY, 1-900-DODD, 1-900-CLINTON, and got busy signals.

Just Damn!

Now how would I know what my kids' friends watched on TV if I wasn't there? Ask them? Oh, okay. And we are shocked and saddened at the teen pregnancy rate and teachers having sex with students and STDs. Where do they get these ideas?

Of course not, but we monitored my kids TV watching. We also monitored our kids friends families.

Family Guy's one of my absolute favorite shows. Democrats better keep away from it!!

I love how on G4TV, all those little techie idiots on AOTS or Xplay love to bash Republicans for being the censorship party. Every so often, they'll report that a democrat is pushing this stuff, and they just kinda look deperessed and not wanting to mention it.

So, why do you let your kids go over to their house when you know their parents don't monitor their own kids tv viewing habits?

Ah,...you beat me to it.

How come I don't take Bama Whamma Mamma Jamma seriously?

Why does he seem like such a phony to me, a Stepford person?

He just seems like an animated creation, just tinsel and glitter behind the tinsel and glitter. Empty, vacuuous, vapid.

This is the kind of low-risk issue that liberals can promote to make them look 'moderate.'

Add in Obama's pleasant demeanor and he will hoodwink many people. But when you examine his record, you find that on issue after issue Obama is a straight-down-the-line left-winger.
