France reacts to 'shockwave of riots'(Paris/France burns Live Thread Night #12)

French police made 395 arrests last night as riots intensified for the 11th consecutive night, with violence and fire engulfing towns from the North to the Mediterranean.

In the impoverished suburbs and satellite towns around Paris, where the unrest began on October 27, churches, schools and warehouses were set alight. At least 1,408 vehicles were destroyed, many more than on previous nights, and the random attacks have spread into the heart of the city.

In Grigny, south of the capital, a gang of around 200 youths are reported to have lured police into a housing estate before opening fire with hunting rifles. At least 30 officers were injured, two seriously with lead pellets in the legs and neck.

Riots broke out in beacons of disaffection across the country from Lille, on the border with Belgium, to Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. In Toulouse, police used tear gas to disperse a mob. Cars were set alight on the streets of Nantes, Orleans, Rennes and Rouen, and youths in St Etienne forced passengers off a bus before burning it. Churches were set ablaze in northern Lens and southern Sete.

In Strasbourg, youths stole a car and rammed it into a housing project, setting the vehicle and the building on fire. "We’ll stop when Sarkozy steps down," the defiant 17-year-old driver told an Associated Press reporter.

Police are calling for a night-time curfew in affected areas and some senior officers have demanded that troops are brought on to the streets.

Michel Gaudin, France's most senior police officer, said today: "We are witnessing a sort of shock wave that is spreading across the country."

A great nation and culture that has given so much to Europe and the world in the fields of science, mathematics, philosopy, theology, political theory, the arts and literature is coming to an end. There is nothing now that can save France from its downward spiral into decadence and disintegration.

Maybe the arts, certainly decadent art.... but I would question the extent of their contribution in the other areas especially science & math (Louis Pasteur being an exception of course). I read in a different article that described France as being America's oldest enemy, with one exception being their assistance during our Revolutionary War of Independence. Other than that they have consistently undermined America over the past 250 years, and especially our efforts (and wars) against global communism and now global terrorism.

Sorry, I don't feel very much sympathy for the French at this time, led by their weak, cowardly, appeasing leader, Jacques Chirac. They are reaping the seeds of terrorism they have encouraged and fostered for the last 40 years.

"But that is not the law"....Er, in Texas it is the law. And if it weren't there is a famous American quote that says: "If thats the law then the law is an ass"!

"Chirac and de Villepin are cowards but at least their tastefully dressed cowards."

Yeah but the both of them had top buttons buttoned in their three piece suits....as shown in their joint presser.

Basic fashion screw-up

"Hummmm....why would these "poor, disaffected youths" be burning down CHRISTIAN churches? Inquiring minds want to know...but the press doesn't. And no mosque's are being burned down. Also on Saturday night an incindiary device was thrown at a Synagogue in France. The press is clueless.

You would think all these youts yelling "Allah snackbar" (or whatever it is Mooslims say about their rock god)would be a clue to the media. I suspect they all know darn well what is going on, they just support it. After all, many are arab owned.

The french need to call out the military right away in such a case. Dithering any longer is just plain criminal on the part of the govt.

They have a military??????

Classic example of what happens when you respond to violence with WEAKNESS.

And, our defeated presidential demo candidate would have responded for us in the same manner had he been elected!

Kerry should go over to France & "TALK" to the thugs.

Might be a long shot, but my guess is that terror funding has already begun, guns included. Can't you hear the cries: Let's go to France and keep things stirred up...then Germany and so on!

I don't think it's a long shot, you're probably right, they know how inept the French are, rather than fight, they're busy making white flags to wave!

Yes, get worried. As usual, and regardless of history, it will be the US' job to clean up the mess - and only when it gets really really messy.

You want to see riots here, just let Bush send help to France!!!!!

"Only a matter of time before the islamic brotherhood or AQ or hezbollah smuggle in some AK47's."

No question. But there were, in fact, shotguns. Just that not all the leftist writers were willing to say it. I wanted to get that particular point straight, one way or the other.

The word, "pellets", used following up the word, "hunting rifles", it was all an effort to confuse and throw dirt in the eyes of the reader, IMO.
