France reacts to 'shockwave of riots'(Paris/France burns Live Thread Night #12)

French police made 395 arrests last night as riots intensified for the 11th consecutive night, with violence and fire engulfing towns from the North to the Mediterranean.

In the impoverished suburbs and satellite towns around Paris, where the unrest began on October 27, churches, schools and warehouses were set alight. At least 1,408 vehicles were destroyed, many more than on previous nights, and the random attacks have spread into the heart of the city.

In Grigny, south of the capital, a gang of around 200 youths are reported to have lured police into a housing estate before opening fire with hunting rifles. At least 30 officers were injured, two seriously with lead pellets in the legs and neck.

Riots broke out in beacons of disaffection across the country from Lille, on the border with Belgium, to Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. In Toulouse, police used tear gas to disperse a mob. Cars were set alight on the streets of Nantes, Orleans, Rennes and Rouen, and youths in St Etienne forced passengers off a bus before burning it. Churches were set ablaze in northern Lens and southern Sete.

In Strasbourg, youths stole a car and rammed it into a housing project, setting the vehicle and the building on fire. "We’ll stop when Sarkozy steps down," the defiant 17-year-old driver told an Associated Press reporter.

Police are calling for a night-time curfew in affected areas and some senior officers have demanded that troops are brought on to the streets.

Michel Gaudin, France's most senior police officer, said today: "We are witnessing a sort of shock wave that is spreading across the country."

No, the question is- do we want to.

We have to protect France's nuclear arsenal. They have an estimated 350 warheads and missiles with a range of 3600 miles. They also have plenty of short-range missiles that can be launched from mobile platforms. If these were to fall into terrorists hands, all of Europe could be held hostage.

Here's a link for info about French weapon systems

I'd imagine the Danes don't have the same slum conditions found around Paris. What are the complaints of the Muslims in Denmark?

LOL. Damn, it says something when the only government official in France that seems to still have a pair must be assumed to be of non-French ancestry!!!

You couldn't make this stuff up! France is still waiting for foreigners to save her from her own inbred ruling class. No wonder Chiraq and deVillepanties hate him so much.

Sarkozy was brought up in a Judeo-Christian household. He's outnumbered 5 million to one, and is still holding on.

When the US chooses to take action, it shouldn't be for France.

How come we're not hearing about the Muslim rioting going on in Denmark?

How come us in America aren't hearing about the nightly terror happening now on French streets?

One minute blips from the MSM and that's it.

I can assure you if 1400 hundred cars were torched in one night in the streets of America, katie couric in the morning would be screaming, but it is happening in France, liberal paradise, so they put their hands up to their ears and scream, "lalalalalala, I don't hear you" and go about their day like nothing is wrong.

It's almost 8:00 PM, Rush out of the loop, he thought it was 1400 cars burned in the last week and a half, instead of last night.

Thanks ET for the report from Sky News, much appreciated.

I just realized today - whenever most countries have disasters (natural or otherwise), there is usually an outpouring of offers of support from governments worldwide. As far as I know, there have been no calls made to France offering support (equipment, swat teams, intel, etc). Seems like everyone is silently letting France go down in flames. Not that I'm complaining....

BBC World seems to having a fairly heavy coverage tonight...

They have a correspondent out in the one suburb with a curfew. Will be interesting to see how that turns out..

Interesting observation. The only offer for help I have seen was Libya, which was refused.

That's what happens when your country has stabbed most of the free world in the back repeatedly, has offended *everyone*, and has held itself superior to everyone else by claiming to be Utopia.

France has claimed that its ability to handle anything dwarfs that of anyone else, anywhere, any time. The rest of the world is simply taking France at its word and watching.
