France reacts to 'shockwave of riots'(Paris/France burns Live Thread Night #12)

French police made 395 arrests last night as riots intensified for the 11th consecutive night, with violence and fire engulfing towns from the North to the Mediterranean.

In the impoverished suburbs and satellite towns around Paris, where the unrest began on October 27, churches, schools and warehouses were set alight. At least 1,408 vehicles were destroyed, many more than on previous nights, and the random attacks have spread into the heart of the city.

In Grigny, south of the capital, a gang of around 200 youths are reported to have lured police into a housing estate before opening fire with hunting rifles. At least 30 officers were injured, two seriously with lead pellets in the legs and neck.

Riots broke out in beacons of disaffection across the country from Lille, on the border with Belgium, to Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. In Toulouse, police used tear gas to disperse a mob. Cars were set alight on the streets of Nantes, Orleans, Rennes and Rouen, and youths in St Etienne forced passengers off a bus before burning it. Churches were set ablaze in northern Lens and southern Sete.

In Strasbourg, youths stole a car and rammed it into a housing project, setting the vehicle and the building on fire. "We’ll stop when Sarkozy steps down," the defiant 17-year-old driver told an Associated Press reporter.

Police are calling for a night-time curfew in affected areas and some senior officers have demanded that troops are brought on to the streets.

Michel Gaudin, France's most senior police officer, said today: "We are witnessing a sort of shock wave that is spreading across the country."

Well, a curfew would still be a good idea. It would give parents another tool in controlling their kids.

Someone posted on one of the other threads something interesting, that the fathers in many cases have gone back to the ME after depositing their wives and children to drain the social services.

In the islamic world, the mothers aren't allowed to discipline their sons, only the fathers are.

So essentially these "youts" have no one to tell them to get in line.

That sounds like some of the fathers we have in this country, too, and the majority aren't Muslim.

But that being said, you make a good point. Something else France should've kept in mind and wouldn't.

Sounds to me like it's MOAB time in France. Of course, the big question the frogs have to ask themselves: Got MOAB?

Well, finally we're seeing some of these mobs of "youts" in photos.

Looks like it took the German press to break the embargo though.

Yep. One RPG hitting a police personnel carrier is all they will need to complete the seizure of control of the banlieux. After that, just a short step to seizing the capital itself?

It makes no sense. Someone smuggled the weapons to the Muslim fanatics anyways and the 2 dead electrocuted kids was but the excuse they were waiting for to start the riots.

Actually, MOAB's would be overkill. The police just have to start shooting back. I remember once a while ago a poster in FR, one of our soldiers, said that he had served alongside some French units at one point (I forget where) and that the actual soldiers themselves where quite professional and willing to fight. It's their leaders who are the surrender monkeys.

I'm sure if the French police were taken off their very short leash, these riots would be over in a day.

Exactly almost 3,000 cars torched in 2 nights and riots in a score of cities in a country 1/5 the size of the US in population and hardly anything on American TV or in the papers. Well how dare we criticize the French after the inept response to Katrina and New Orleans...after all its only the poor and downtrodden acting out....

Your missing the point and should not make that comparison. It isn't fair to your elders.

If the media were doing its job they would be telling the truth that is is Muslim fanatics doing the rioting...because they hate all things western..... it has ZERO to do with poverty as these immigrants in France would be even poorer in their native countries.

I just hope he realizes that just because they've been bought, doesn't mean they'll stay bought for long.

The problem is worse than that. These people are outbreeding the ability of the failing socialist economy to support their idle wasted lives.

France doesn't have the money to buy them off.

But it shows just one more reason why France was so desperate to get their hands on Saddam's oil money.
