Tax Changes on the Horizon
Buzz Timothy, BellaOnline's Accounting Editor

The President's Advisory Panel on Tax Reform finished its ten month investigation and research and has submitted its two best proposals to the US Treasury Department. The Treasury Department has said it will make its own tax reform proposals by the end of this year. Congress is scheduled to begin the tax reform debate next year.

But, what does tax reform really mean? Well, the tax reforms that have been put forth so far are at best disappointing, at worst they are nothing more than tweaks to an outdated, enormously confusing and cumbersome income tax system. The basis of both of the Panel's proposals is to reduce or eliminate deductions, thereby seemingly to simplify a cumbersome tax code.

However, if you look a bit deeper and really read the proposals, one finds that the panel has missed a great opportunity to come up with a tax system we could all live with. A tax system that is fair accross the board and fixes the one fundamental flaw in our current tax system, that is changing it from an income based to a use based system. Although one of the proposals is being touted as a Use or Consumption Based Tax, it is really not, it is truly an income based system being disguised.

The Tax Reform Panelists should have taken a blank piece of paper and devised a completely new, equitable and simple tax system. Instead they chose the politically easy choice of starting with the existing system and trying to change it, rather than fix it, when in fact, looking at their proposals, they have done niether they have only tweaked it.

What we need is a flat tax that is based on use. We already have this in place when in comes to gasoline, alcohol and cigarettes, why is it so difficult to think that this couldn't be expanded to all "used or consumed" items and completely do away with the income based system. As long as we live with an income based system individuals and businesses will always try to find ways to limit their incomes to hide from the overzealous tax code. However, if you change the focus of our tax system to a use based system then, "if you use it you pay". It really is that simple, and shouldn't that be our ultimate goal.

You obviously do

Wrong. I see them, with all the pretty bright colors and childish caps and such, but I have never read one. Nor will I.

It's a darn good thing you aren't a salesman, you would starve.

When we stop government from stealing our money we can stop them from spending it.

This was a viable hypothesis in 1980.

It has since been proven false.

Zon: The grass root method if engaging the masses to force congress to implement the fair tax, abolish the IRS and repeal the 16th amendment doesn't stop there. 10

Protagoras: You have the order precisely backwards. And until you reverse it, you will never get any traction. 55

Zon: The government is the people's servant. It's not as you imply that government is the master. Learn from your error or proceed at your own peril.56

Protagoras: I never implied any such thing. 58

You're backpedaling. I have the correct order and wonder how you would reorder it.

LOL, so you admit to responding in ignorance. As is obvious from your comments.

Best thing is to keep money out of the reach of thieving governments and hold currencies less likely to be devalued.

I didn't backpedal. Are you always this disconnected from reality?

You have the order precisely backwards. And until you reverse it, you will never get any traction.

[ You have your gun, you have your choice, that is the nature of an unalienable right. Choose carefully grasshopper, the outcome of revolutions have little to do with the desires of cannonfodder. ]

The U.S. has only had one revolution, the results were quite good..

LOL, so admit to beating your wife. LOL

I don't read your imbecilic cut and posts.

I assure you I am not ignorant about the topic or your attempts to mislead people. The problem for you is that you realize that your childish tactics have been repeatedly exposed.

And once again we see, the entire thread is you me and your little pal. No other posts, no other interest, no traction, no nothing. Just you and your agenda.

All the rest of my communications with you will be private now and we will let this thread die a merciful boring death just like all the threads by you guys. It won't take long.

90% of the people that educate themselves about the FairTax are in agreement with it replacing the income tax. The FairTax book had several weeks on the top ten  NYT bestseller list.

I don't read your imbecilic cut and posts.

Obviously, for if you read them, or went to the hyperlinked text provided in my comments you would not be characterizing them as such.

I assure you I am not ignorant about the topic or your attempts to mislead people.

A statement, which of itself, demonstrates your basic ignorance about what the article and my comments are about.

And once again we see, the entire thread is you me and your little pal.

Hmmm, I'd say 10+ unique visits per comment is not a bad ratio:

But then facts never get past your discriminating eyeballs, especially if they happen to contain standard color coded hyperlinks in them , per your own admission:

Protogoras: "I see them, with all the pretty bright colors and childish caps and such, but I have never read one. Nor will I."

Wonder how long that will last. So you intend to skulk in private rather than open debate. Igonorance is a ignorance does.

The U.S. has only had one revolution, the results were quite good..

Indeed, so where's your George Washington to lead this little revolution of yours to a conclusion that leads to the same Constitutition we already have.

Good luck, gun fodder.

"The government is the people's servant. It's not as you imply that government is the master. Learn from you error or proceed at you own peril."

That is what the Founding Father's intended. What was it Benjamin Franklin uttered after a question as to what type of government had been established? "A Republic, if you can keep it."

Thomas Jefferson also opined the fact that once the citizenry discovered their ability to vote to themselves monies via the legislative branch they will have shackled themselves in the chains of bondage.

Consider this: The government, via the people's cries for "service", has taken control of our monetary system, the amount of a citizen's income and retirement, education, agriculture, energy, natural resources, property rights, prevention of undue search and seizure, privacy, all manner of business, communication, etc...soon to be added: healthcare.

Once a government controls such things, the citizens underneath it are no longer free.

"So, then the 2nd amendment is not provided to make revolution legal..."

The 2nd amendment was established so that the citizens of our nation would have the means to defend themselves from government gone awry. Furthermore, a Founding Father did state that revolution is at times a necessity to maintain liberty.

I do not know who is arguing against you but if the implication is that firearms are not allowed for those purposes, then I would like to know what they are allowed for?

Whether or not the citizenry would ever have the courage to defend themselves against a government transformed to tyranny is another matter.

At the time of the rise of American Independence, there were many colonists who did not want to be bothered with liberty. They preferred to live under the thumb of an oppressive monarchy. It is a good thing for us that they were ignored.

The sticker in the wicket of any rebellion, is knowing who is really running the show and their acual agenda when it ends.

They wanted to make George Washington a king, and he had the wisdom and moral certitude to not accept that crown. I don't see any I would trust in to do the same today.

Might have to hang the icehole when the political winter is over.

I wouldn't put my bets on anyone in today's moral climate. A high risk venture indeed. Political winters can be, and generally are, very long, deep and cold.

You keep posting such unfounded trash apparently since you have nothing else. The propagandist Bruce Bartlett is the main guy pushing this nonsense trying to make the connection between the Church of Scientology and the FairTax.

Tain't so, Willie - the CATS plan used as the base for such nonsense preceded the FairTax, but the FairTax was generated by a different group with quite different motivation. Bartlett constantly pushes this misinformation when he writes since he promotes a dramatically different tax form (Flat/VAT). Are you trying to tell us that you support his desired tax form? Or do you just enjoy lying to try to trash anything FairTax?
