The Rev. Waters: Congresswoman 'preaches' in Tulsa

Oklahoman Editorial

Supporters of reparations for victims and survivors of the 1921 Tulsa race war have lost every political and legal battle they've waged. The fight hasn't left them, though. Judging from remarks made Sunday, the effort has morphed into a subset of the general dissatisfaction with the Bush administration.

Led by U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., the meeting was aptly held in a Tulsa church. A reporter described it as a congressional hearing "that sounded more like a revival meeting." To us it sounded more like a Michael Moore rally.

Waters preached to the choir, telling them the U.S. Supreme Court, which Bush is trying to complete with a second nomination, put him into office. What has the 2000 election got to do with the outbreak of racial violence on a spring night in 1921?

Waters boasted that she's "an angry black woman" and she doesn't care what Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney or Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice think of her. What does that have to do with honoring the unknown number of people killed in 1921 and the massive property damage to an area once known as the "Black Wall Street"?

As they've done consistently, reparations supporters are giving victims and survivors false hope. Federal courts at every level have turned down lawsuits seeking payments. They did so because of a thing called the rule of law and another thing called the statute of limitations.

Being a lawmaker, Waters should have utmost respect for the rule of law. Instead, she seems to relish being at the pulpit and casting herself as a champion for civil rights. Meanwhile, a real champion by the name of Rosa Parks was lying in repose at the U.S. Capitol. Parks made a quiet but courageous gesture that changed the civil rights movement overnight. Waters could honor the race war victims by championing a first-class monument to their memory. Apparently, she's more interested in preaching the politics of race.

Don't think Maxine Waters impressed the Oklahoman newspaper even a little. (Note: Bold is mine -- couldn't resist)

Looks Maxine Waters should stay out of Middle America -- I cracked up laughing when I read this editorial from our OKC paper -- don't think she would get elected here.

She is one angry, messed up woman. On the night L.A. burned, she was at one of the projects dancing with gang bangers.

Maxine should listen to her brother, Shelby Steel, the Hoover Institute Resident Fellow. It is his opinion that the onus is now on the blacks to bring themselves up and that "white America" owes blacks nothing. "History never achieves perfect justice." Get on with your lives.

You have my sincere appology for Maxine Waters being foisted off on unsuspecting Tulsa citizens. As you stated, the Oklahoman does seem to have a clear focus on what Maxine Waters is. Sadly, her California constituents don't.

Vile is about the only appropriate word for Ms. Waters.

Vile seems to be in vogue right now. The sleazier, more disgusting and anti-American you can be, the better for today's DISloyal opposition.

May they rot in...

I cannot feature having Maxine Waters for a sister -- her brother sounds like a class act -- same cannot be said for her.

I was surprised to see the Oklahoman with this editorial since she was on the other side of the state in Tulsa. Think I will send this to Water's office tomorrow and let her know what Oklahomans think of her visit! :)

Oh she'd cut out the article and wear it as a badge of honor.

Sick, sick, sick...

Thanks for the post.

She is one angry, messed up woman.

Allow me to offer a second opinion: she's ugly, too.
