Longtime CBS Evening News anchorman Dan Rather on Tuesday called for a return to independent journalism, telling viewers to be critical of the plethora of "new" media outlets that feign objectivity while working to advance their own - or another's - agenda.
"You need to ask yourself: Is more better, and is all that calls itself news really news," Rather told the estimated 1,400 people who filled the Maine Center for the Arts near capacity for his morning speech on the University of Maine campus. "News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. All the rest is advertising."

"Nice shoes, Mr. Rather. Oh, and just one more thing...
It's probably just me, but there's something about these memos that doesn't add up."

Advice from Rather . . .
They might just as well invite
Gale Weathers to speak!

"News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know."That is one of the stupidest things ever said. Even for Rather. But it does reveal the National Enquirer mindset of what used to be called the mainstream media. (Apologies to the National Enquirer. At least they're honest about what they do.)

Just what young journalism students need, wisdom from a dead dinosaur. Anyone who goes to college and majors in 'journalism' is already a retard anyhow. To stupid to try and make it as a teacher.
Most will end up as perverts or state representatives.

At least Danny got one thing right. The biggest threat to liberalism is the new media. No wonder he is talking us down.
I'll never forget the time ol' Danny boy came to Islamorada. He stayed at the most expensive place in town, wore an overcoat, the whole time, a hat and put on a fake mustache. The rest of us were in shorts and tee shirts. Boy he stuck out like a sore thumb. But we let guests have their fun no matter who they are, even lame Danny.

News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. Like the memo was a forgery, Danny Boy? Is that news? You certainly didn't want us to know it.

"The only difference between "New" and "Old" media Danny boy is the New media tells you right up front what their biases are, while you Dinosaur clowns keep LYING about yours." Well said; I've never seen the issue stated as simply and concisely.
