The book is nothing but one big bash of Bush. Sr., Cheyney, etc. Big oil is the enemy, etc...

The "Jarhead" who wrote it has the IQ of a gnat...

Sorry I wasted by $8 on a paperback.

I read the book and it was very good - entertaining and well written.

The book is of the author's life in the Corps - which he and other Marines called The Suck - and his life right after the Corps.

The reason I can stomach movies like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket is by ignoring the political message and taking it as a dry humor. The politics in the book were very subtle, and probably unintentional - I don't believe the author was making a political statement in his book (but the author didn't direct the movie and probably had little say in its final product).

But all-in-all, one thing has to be remembered: Snipers are creepy people and live in a world all their own. I got a sense throughout the book that something bigger was being aluded to, maybe a Marine was able to figure it out, or maybe it was just the sniper being a sniper.

What ever happened to heroic John Wayne type war movies?

What makes me leary is that my liberal cousin told me last year that he was reading a provocative book called "Jarhead".

He wouldn't of read it or spoken of it if it had any redeeming qualities.

Listen! Hear that giant sucking sound? It's this movie. 'Welcome to the suck' is right.

I saw an advanced showing tonight...free of charge thank goodness! I would have been pissed had i payed even $6 to see it.

It was a conglomeration of poorly done, re-created scenes from other war movies that culminated into a big nothingness. Character development even sucked. Very unrealistic to boot. Did they not have enough money to hire ex-military advisors? sheesh.

Take it in if you want, but don't have high expectations...

I'd love to see a good movie on the Gulf War and the Marines, but I don't want to pay $$ for a bunch of Hollywood liberal crap.

If anyone sees this movie, please post your impressions/opinions. If it's good, I'll go.

I hate to open an old wound for some but feel it is necessary that we not forget that book Jarhead.

Jarhead is still being hawked by some in the Academic world as a true picture of what the Marines and military service is all about.

My wife is attending an advanced class on public speaking.

Her professor has announced with fanfare great admiration for Hillary Clinton and the politics of liberalism.

This professor assigned her the project of reading and developing a report and speech on the book Jarhead.

I have never seen the movie but from what I have read in the first few chapters of the book, makes me want to just puke.

The first few pages of this book makes it well known that the author is a low life character willing to do what ever it takes to push his arrogant agenda against the military.

My wife says the book is a hard read.

She went to the professor and complained and was told in no uncertain terms that the book represented what the Marine Corps and United States military service was all about.

She was also told that if she wants a good grade (a must for graduate school) she must finish the project and give a positive report and speech about the book.

OK so this turned into a rant but we must not forget that just because a person served in the military does not necessarily make them a good guy.
