"People have the impression that teens and unmarried mothers are synonymous," said Stephanie Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics.
But last year teens accounted for just 24 percent of unwed births, down from 50 percent in 1970, she commented.
The increases in unmarried births have been among women in their 20s, she said, particularly those 25 to 29.

If the terms of marriage were reversed and women were required to enter a legally subserviant position i.e. surrender their future income and their children at the drop of a hat, I very much doubt women would marry.

People tend to get what they deserve. The women in those situations got what they deserve.
But it's the children who really suffer.
White: 18,000 fewer births in 2004 than 2003
Hispanic: 32,000 more births in 2004 than 2003
Asian: 8,000 more births in 2004 than 2003
Black: 72 more births in 2004 than 2003

I guess I'm a traditionalist. I'm in favor of marriage. It add stability to a relationship, especially if there are children. Now, I never had children, but I'm sure happy to be married to a wonderful woman.

True - they aren't getting what they deserve. They just had the misfortune of being born to an irresponsible parent.
As a public policy matter, there isn't much we can do I am afraid.

I praise all who are hard working honest Americans. I also praise those who stick together as husband and wife and do their best to make things work out.
Well said. While single parents deserve our help through acts of kindness and charity as needed, it is not the best situation and we should never pretend that it is.
