Mayor Gavin Newsom declared San Francisco strong and getting stronger in his annual State of the City address Wednesday and said he will create a city of hope and opportunity that embraces emerging industries and trains a competitive workforce -- at the same time making the surroundings more safe, healthy and beautiful.
"As we reshape our urban environment,'' Newsom said, "we are reimagining San Francisco as a city of possibility, a city that will attract families and so nurture the next generation, a city that will attract economic investment and so ensure that our basic needs are met.''
Newsom delivered his 71-minute speech as he nears the halfway mark of his inaugural four-year term and as his popularity remains sky-high in the polls. He stuck with the upbeat and avoided such topics as the Municipal Railway's recent service cuts and fare increase and the messy hiring and firing of Tony Hall, whom the mayor hand-picked to run the Treasure Island development project but whose appointment he said he later regretted.
The speech, which he read from a teleprompter and was titled "Why it matters to be a San Franciscan,'' was peppered with both politics and policy.
The mayor, who is positioning himself as a new voice for the Democratic Party, took a handful of verbal swipes at the state's Republican governor and the nation's Republican president. He also used the forum as an opportunity to talk up the accomplishments of his appointees to the posts of city treasurer and city assessor, who face election next month.
And like his predecessors, Newsom followed the outline that must be tucked in some mayoral handbook somewhere that requires the mention of housing, homelessness, the environment, public safety, jobs, education, the perennial hunt for government efficiencies and other concerns municipal leaders face.

What kind of family would want to live in San Francisco?
Did he say "Camel Butt?"
I'd settle for the old 'Baghdad by the Bay', myself.
What kind of family could AFFORD to live in San Francisco?
Well, considering that a "family" these days can be any aggregation of beings with a discernible pulse, one can imagine several possibilities.
Oh all kinds. The Manson Family. The Black Guerilla Family. The Rosie O'Donnell Family....
Tony Hall is an Independent, married, with seven, normal, healthy, nice children. He is a cantor at a Catholic Church (St. Bredan). He ran for supervisor first, before this job and won, against the Democrat heavyweight Mabel Teng....and won in a run-off by 38 votes (out of 4000).
He was driven out of the Supervisor's job, with four heart attacks in four years. He was doing a great job in the Treasure Island job, a bribe/carrot/promise to get him out of the Supervisor position...therefore, because he was so good at it, he was fired from the Treasure Island debacle. The ole Peter Principle.
Treasure Island (and a truer name was never had by an island) is the home of welfare people now....ever since the City and the bay area drove out the military with their anti-military attitude. It's all such a load.
Tony Hall isn't the norm in San Francisco, but he isn't unique.
Well, considering that a "family" these days can be any aggregation of beings with a discernible pulse - just to confirm, our family is man, woman, son, daughter, and cat.
See post number seven.
I'd rather live in San Francisco than New Orleans, New York, L.A. or Hollywood.
Besides, San Francisco is now the NINTH most liberal city. Detroit is NUMBAH ONE. Of course, Berkely is number two or three.
Oakland's mayor is Jerry Brown...he's mayor of SUCH a lovely city.
I would hate to see what "Any Twosome" Newsom calls a family.
So would I.
1. Families that are stinking rich.
2. Families who have worked overseas a few years for petroleum companies and made more money than God.
3. Families that inherited their homes from parents who bought when prices weren't so high.
4. Families of doctors, lawyers and softwarers....see Sillycon valley.
The entire BAY AREA prices are outrageous. Some out-of-staters are SURE that the bay area is going to sink into the Pacific Ocean anyway, with the next "big one." I guess L.A. won't go into the same ocean, for some odd reason. Lol.
I grew up in California when there were only 10 million of us. There are now 38 million.....mostly from out-of-state.
You folks NOT in California: STAY HOME ALREADY!
You should run for mayor!
I'm serious!
The city needs an enema! We've been back once since Jordan was mayor and gad we couldn't even walk down the sidewalks without tripping over people sleeping.
1. Families that are stinking rich. - wrong we are not even close.
2. Families who have worked overseas a few years for petroleum companies and made more money than God. - not true
3. Families that inherited their homes from parents who bought when prices weren't so high. - not true we saved our money and did not get a dime from parents and bought our home
4. Families of doctors, lawyers and softwarers....see Sillycon valley. - wrong again, insurance clerk and school teacher -
Why do you feel the need to belittle people, please - you stay home.
