I think you're right. Get ready for Justice Gonzalez.

Not much difference between a 25% conservative and a 10%'er.

If Bush nominates someone clearly to the left of O'Connor out of spite, it at least is an honest clear message, and not a bamboozle, like Miers was. That would allow for a proper debate about the future of the party.

Let's hope he's learned his lesson about so-called stealth candidates. He needs to take a stand: with us or against us.

I agree. I wouldn't break out the champagne just yet. I am dreading an intellectually elite nominee with a distinguished career piece who goes on to write brilliant opinions ... supporting the liberal view. Another Justice O'Connor? I guess that would be better than another Justice Souter, but I sure hope those aren't the choices.

Spiting the conservative critics would not be a smart move on W's part. He would be better served by nominating a known conservative - one who was passed on by the gang of 14 as acceptable - to gain back conservative loyalty. If he becomes vindictive, he will be abandoned.

Here's my take. I was initially suspect of Roberts but so far I really like him. I don't think it's gonna be JRB, but I don't think it will be Gonzales either. It will be either a Priscilla Owen type, or another, female, lesser known judge somewhat more conservative than O'Connor.

I'm afraid you are correct. This was President Bush's attempt to reach out to the conservatives more; he was snubbed. I would not be surprised to see a nominee we like even less. I dearly hope I am wrong.

Well, if that were the case, then we're right where we were with Harriet Miers as the nominee and Bush will have an even worse conservative revolt to deal with.

I don't think the president is that stupid.

Do you really think President Bush wants to pick a fight with a large percentage of his base? I don't. Expect a highly qualified, clearly conservative nominee.
