WASHINGTON - Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.
Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.
"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."
Well, kudos to her for doing the right thing under the circumstances.
I'd like to see that. Or better yet: re-nominate Judge Bork! Now that would be worth the price of admission.
Amen.
"Get ready for Gonzalez."
But he has the same internal Administration documents problem that was the reason for Meirs' withdrawal. They have to pick someone not currently serving in the Administration.
Yes, Janice Rogers Brown is who we need!!!
"Now give us someone we can all agree on."
In the imortal words of the Swedish Chef on Sesame Street, "Bork, Bork, Bork."
Robert Bork would be the ultimate foxtrot uniform to the scumbag left.
It is nice to live through an example of our system working the way it is supposed to.
Hopefully President Bush learns from this mistake. He needs to put his trust in the people who elected him.
We are going to have a fight, no matter who is appointed.
So lets make it worthwhile.
money and power. there are your biggies.
"Who assasinated her character?"
Oh please. You can't be serious.
Good!
Now it's time for a known nominee, (hint) Brown.
The Rats have been punk'd. A more capable and conservative WOMAN will be the next nominee/justice.
think about it.
"Like what? Any candidate that doesn't get Borked by the extreme left will get Borked by the extreme right."
So, getting Borked by extremely bad people for bogus reasons is the moral equivalent of getting Borked by good people for valid reasons?
The false moral equivalence, usually the exclusive tool of the left, is really getting a workout on this thread.
"Bush tried to avoid the showdown between his own Republican party."
He should have NEVER put us in this position with his stupid nomination.
I don't think so. I believe he will nominate someone openly acceptable by his base. Miers took much abuse without saying anything. Definitely a classy woman...
I tend to agree with you. Conservatives have been empowered and they will not accept a Gonzales. I think this president is astute enough to realize that. OTOH, we have also empowered the left with our public insistence that we have a pro-life evangelical. A fight is really coming. But I still want Janice Rodgers Brown!
And what facts did the National Review get wrong?
"I will get a kick out of all the people who have been claiming how unprincipled conservatives are whine about this."
I don't see how this changes the fact that a lot of the whiners WERE unprincipled and remain so.
I figured some of you would be happy and doing cartwheels. I for one excepted her and think she would have been a good SCJ. Why anyone would want to go through the name calling and baggering she has gone through is beyond my understanding. I am sure Laura Ingraham, and Whiny Ann Coulter are happy. They have shown me their true colors and I will never support either of them again.
President Bush, I continue to support you!
