Some of us felt that way about this pick. Paraphrasing Otter from "Animal House": "We f***** up; we trusted him."
The nomination turned out badly, and GWB has to assume blame for that. Some of the criticism of the nomination was fair and accurate; other criticism was over-the-top and disgusting.
This withdrawal is no victory for anyone (except the 'Rats). The President now has to choose between nominating someone totally unacceptable to the Right, and nominating someone who is filibuster bait. Or, he might try to straddle the fence with a pick like Edith Clement. What a mess.
Please explain how the withdrawel of a woman with very little track record is a win for the democrats? LOL, they've been Harriet's most ardent supporters during this process. Harry Reed's first pronouncements sounded as if he'd nominated her.
Putting another Souter on the court would have been a win for the Democrats! We have no way of knowing Miers wouldn't have morphed into one.
Conservatism won. Miers may have turned out to be a good conservative. I don't think so. The next nomination should have a track record, and should be a known quantity before any of us sign on.
One unknown quantity lost, is NOT a win for the democrats.

I guess you won't make that mistake again!
...filibuster bait...
There is a reason that America voted to put the GOP in charge of the government. Its about time that the government starts doing what the voters wanted.
Fighting for the will of the American voter (lose or win) is better than ignoring the voters and avoiding a fight.
