Easy:
- Pick a senator like John Kyl, Jeff Sessions, or Orrin Hatch
- Pick a former senator like Fred Thompson
- Pick the former Solicitor General, Ted Olsen
Any of these would be easily confirmed, and all are reliable conservatives.
I agree--the person who vetted her was her immediate subordinate. He was put in an impossible position.
I feel badly for Harriet Miers. I can't help it...I cringed every time she was called incompetent. I think she could have been just fine but I do understand the desire to have a better spelled out judicial philosophy.
I wish her Godspeed in whatever she does and I look forward to finding out who the new nominee will be.
Janice Rogers Brown Baby!! : )
Janice Rogers Brown -- she's my pick!

I suspect he will do the opposite, and name a nice moderate pro choice king in a black dress. Bush just got attacked and stabbed by his "allies", so I doubt that he will put anyone up that will anger either side.
Not if he nominates a conservative. The haters were the conservatives as we worked too hard to put her on the bench. This is great news. We have more votes than the rats so putting a luttig or brown or anyone of the top conservatives on the bench shouldn't be too hard.
Our squishy FR RINO Chicken Little sickspur says Janice Rogers Brown isn't going to be the next nominee...what do you think W.?
And we still don't know how conservative Roberts is, do we?
The 'far right' uses this tactic? Puh-leeze. As soon as anyone voiced ANY concern about Miers' RECORD here, you and your koolaid-gargling pals were slamming us for being elitist, sexist, traitors without foundation. Stop calling the kettle black, you soot-covered pot.
And BTW, we'll be behind any proven conservative Bush nominates. That's way more than can be expected from you back-knifing RINOs.
Krauthammer called it. Bush's "stated" reason for Miers withdrawl:
"I understand and share her concern, however, about the current state of the Supreme Court confirmation process. It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel. Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her. "
And the filibuster will hold (with no nuclear option possible) if the Gang of 14 moderates agree that the nominee triggers the "extraordinary circumstances" clause of their "agreement".
Folks, this is truly a wonderful morning. The Senate and the WH obviously were influenced by the loud critique of this nomination. It's sort of like a dark cloud has passed and we have an opportunity for a fresh start. But I am not gloating.
You're right-on about the moderates. Like it or not, Bush has to factor them in. I think he'll look for someone like Roberts, a LEGAL conservative, not an ideological conservative (at least not on paper).
Egads, wash your mouth out with soap. I will have "nightmares" all day long thinking about that. LOL
Some people need to remember not to fall in love with a politician.
Sounds like you underestimate Roberts.
Yep! Too bad. I too wanted to listen to what she had to say. I was looking forward to the hearing. What a shame! This is the land of opportunity and speech, and instead she got slugged before she had her say! YUP, what a shame! This is soooo un-American... :(
