US police have arrested Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a US soldier killed in Iraq who has become a prominent war opponent, along with two dozen people for demonstrating without authorisation in front of the White House.
Ms Sheehan became an icon of the anti-war movement when she camped outside President George W Bush's ranch in Texas during his August vacation, demanding he meet her for a second time.
Ms Sheehan had met the President earlier with a group of families of fallen soldiers.
Ms Sheehan and the other protesters staged a "die-in" in front of the the White House, lying on the ground to symbolise US soldiers killed in Iraq.
Several dozen sympathisers applauded as Ms Sheehan and others were taken away, while counter-protesters booed the group.
"Cindy Sheehan has been arrested with about 25 other people because she was demonstrating without a permit in front of the White House," Lieutenant Phil Beck of the US Park Police said.
"They laid down on the sidewalk without a permit, they were advised three times to leave the area, they chose not to leave therefore they were arrested.
"Most of them will probably be released tonight."
They face a $US75 fine.
She has called for civil disobedience around the country to demand the withdrawal of the 140,000 US troops from Iraq, as the US military death toll hit 2,000.
"There comes a time when we have to break a small law, like sitting down in front of the White House, in order to point out a greater law that's being broken," Ms Sheehan said in a statement.
"I can't imagine a greater law being broken than a war being waged in our name, whose justifications have proven to be false, and yet goes on and on anyway, taking the lives of thousands of people," she said.
Ann Wilcox, a protester with the anti-war group Code Pink, called Ms Sheehan "the Rosa Parks of our movement".
Ms Parks, who died this week aged 92, helped spark the civil rights movement nearly 50 years ago when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in segregated Alabama, an act that led to the black woman's arrest.
"I think middle of the road people are starting to see the futility of this war," Ms Wilcox said.
"We are going to continue putting our bodies on the line and being arrested."
Ms Sheehan was arrested in front of the White House late last month along with 370 other protesters and then released.
I've heard so much about Cindy Sheehan.
Who is this Casey person?
Then to my shock the other one ran towards me grabbed my shoulder as said to me with tears welling up in her eyes "I'm so sorry for my ignorance. Thanks so much for your sacrifice and tell your husband and his unit that I changed my mind and my prayers are with them all from this day on."
The site and the signature of the writer looks very credible to me, however, I have a difficult time believing this.
She should be arrested for brandishing a deadly weapon every time she shows her face in public. She's an argument for the burka.
Define "major topic" .
Because train wrecks always draw crowds, perhaps?
bump for a big ole LOSER.
drive by's with paint ball carbines......
Damned Sheehadists..Half of the demonstrators should be arrested for visual and sonic pollution..
sheehan arrested? Good! Just wish they'd keep her.
Too much to wish for.... but I wish they'd accidentally lose her in the system somewhere until the war is over!
I think it is pretty much getting there, more people were clapping as she was towed away than her whole protest drew. When it is getting down to 25 people, camara angles cannot be set up to look like a lot of people anymore and the leftist media will have to go look for stuff elsewhere.
At this point you can be assured than when you hear nothing about Cindy, she is throwing a tantrum somewhere and nobody is watching, cause she is never going to stop.
Isn't it about time the counterprotesters started disrupting the leftist media that promotes that battleaxe? Intermittently squeaking airhorns around her and accidentally smearing a bit of vaseline on the camera lenses of the propagandists would be a good start.
I read somewhere that when they release her she will go right back to the White House and die again and keep doing it until the president stops the war. I guess like a cat Miss She-Ham has got nine lives. Too BAD!
"I think middle of the road people are starting to see the futility of this war," Ms Wilcox said.
Not surprising... only things in 'the middle of the road' are yellow lines and road-kill!
One of my best friends was a sniper in the special forces. M60 vs M16 take down.
If everybody would just ignore this old crone, she'd go away with her tail between her hind legs.
If I were the arresting oficer, I'd try to play that situation. She hates her son who died serving hi country. She is a POS to the nth degree! If anyone in my family pulled this BS; I'd smack the sh!t out of him/her, and write 'em out of my will.

In front of the White House? Probably not a good idea.
That would certainly be her personal hell. Wouldn't it be great to be walking past her as she drooled and ranted, then to stop right smack dab in front of her, pull out a map and say to your walking partner - "Hmmm...says here that White House visiting hours are from 2 to 4...OK...let's get over to the Air & Space Museum."
Which Sox? The navy blue, gray, or black?
