"Fill it in and Move on"

What? Do you not know N.O. is a major port? Do you not know midwestern farmers count on our port? Are you not aware of the oil and gas this area provides for the economic engine of the U.S.? I guess we could fill it in, then everyone will be bitchin' about their 7 dollar a gallon gas!

The US needs a major port at or near the mouth of the Mississippi.

That is needs to be located precisely where the Port of NO was prior to Katrina is by no means as obvious.

It is at least arguable that applying the sum of money that will be spent on repairing NO to building a new city and port at a more defensible location would be more logical.

If we are going to spend billions of dollars to rebuild we might as well do it right.

first of all the oil refineries and oil port are not dependant on the city of NO being there.

Secondly the entire flow of the Mississippi is being captured by a smaller river (there was a thread posted on it here somewhere) that runs through Morgan city. Build a set of locks where the current dam/flood gate is and let nature take it's course. Build the new port in morgan city or there abouts.

Blow the levees and let the lake expand to it's natural borders. NO is a cesspool and will remain one.

Port is only an opening into the middle of the country.

Very, very few ships actually stop and unload in NO, compared to those that go upriver to BR and even as far as St Louis.

(The "port" of NO by the way, is already running. Has been for weeks. Who needs the rest of the city (as it was!) if the port is already running?)

Do you propose rebuilding Pompeii?
