Many adults in the United States believe Republican Rudy Giuliani should launch a White House bid, according to a poll by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. 54 per cent of respondents would like the former New York City major to run for president in 2008.
Republican Arizona senator John McCain is second on the list of prospective candidates with 52 per cent, followed by Democratic New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton with 48 per cent, and former North Carolina senator and 2004 Democratic vice-presidential nominee John Edwards with 47 per cent.
Less than 40 per cent of respondents support bids by Massachusetts senator and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, and U.S. state secretary Condoleezza Rice.
Giuliani garnered national and international attention in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The former New York City mayor currently heads Giuliani Partners, LLC—a consulting firm.
In an Oct. 5 speech to business leaders, Giuliani opened the door for a possible White House bid, saying, "I think I’ll return to politics."

Sounds good to me... and the idea that McCain is number two is also hopeful.
Normal pendulum swing of politics would indicate a switch to a Democrat this election, and I fear for the outcome of the war in Iraq if that happens. Therefore, we must put a very popular and attractive candidate up on the platform this time, one who will continue the fight. For that.... Guiliani is a super choice. Perhaps paired with Condi.
What an ignorant statement. Look at the voting record. McCain is not the same as Hillary. He is much more to the right and things would not be the same under both. McCain talks like a RINO around the media but when it comes time to vote, he is undeniably right of center.
I think most people will agree with me. Of course, I'm just speculating here. But if Rudy runs on a center-right platform throughout the 2008 GOP primaries and general election, I think he'll win.

Rudy will repackage himself as a social and fiscal conservative and run for President. If asked why he suddenly became pro-life after years of being pro-abortion, he'll explain that as mayor of NYC, his views were more suited to the people he represented.
I personally do not know one person, democrat or republican, that wants to see Roe overturned. (I am considered a freak in that sense.) A strong social conservative will alienate "suburban" (ie, highly educated, well-off, not super religious) voters. May not matter to most people, but it is a fact.

I will not...WILL NOT vote for a damned backstabbing RINO. I will vote for conservatives down the ballot. If we get the Beast, at least she will look you in the eye when she stabs you in the chest. With McCain, you will never see it coming.

Giuliani will never, ever emerge as a Republican presidential candidate. He could never get past the Republican primaries -- because that's where the base votes.
This shows the inanity of this kind of poll. Pollees are are "voting" pretty much on name recognition, only.
The only two ways I could see Giuliani becoming president is
a) if he were elected as vice president, and the president died/became incapacitated, whatever; or
b) many states switched over to "open primaries," where Dims can vote in Republican primaries and sabotage them.
Don't think there's much change of either of those things happening.

(1) No Republican candidate is going to propose a constitutional amendment banning abortion, in today's political climate (I wish they would, but the realities of Washington says otherwise).
(2) Overturning Roe vs Wade does not eliminate abortions; It just returns the matter back to the states.
(3) Assuming he runs, Guilani may make a few statements saying he's opposed to abortion (to appease conservatives) but will say that any abortion proposal has to go through Congress anyway.

I'm definitely no hardline rightwinger. Like Reagan, I'm just a mainstream conservative. Conservatives have principles and while we do negotiate and compromise from time to time, we don't surrender basic core values and beliefs. Conservatives don't vote for pro-abortion liberals. We respect all human life, born or unborn. If you have a problem with that, too bad. I've voted GOP for 33 years. In that time I voted for one pro-choice candidate, because I thought it was right. That would be Gerald Ford in 1976. And we all know what happened to Ford.

There is another possibility. Rudy will say he believes abortion should be legal, but also believes it should be the decision of the state governments.
I just think we need to realize the vast majority of people do not want Roe overturned or if they do, they want the states to vote on it individually. Now, if we want to fight that head on, great, but it may be a losing gambit politically. If Hilary gets in, there is no prayer of overturning Roe and partial birth abortion becomes legal.
There are lots of fascinating political considerations here.
