Have most of our FL people checked in?

I'm a little worried about jsh3180 (17 mile marker just north of key west) - his last append on 10/23/2005 at 8:19:45 PM PDT said

"I built my own home in 1996. engineered to withstand 175mph winds. It's a bit hairy right now though, my home is 35 feet tall with a huge wall facing south, which is where the wind is currently coming from. You can feel the house swaying a bit in the wind and the water in the toilets is sloshing around like surf.

I've been through this before and will get through this one as well.

Anxiety level is a bit high though."

Inforamtion regarding Operation Blue Roof....

http://www.nola.com/newslogs/hurricanehelp/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_hurricanehelpcenter/archives/2005_10.html#089086

Operation Blue Roof is a FEMA-assigned mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that provides temporary repairs to both residential and public building roofs damaged by Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

Corps contractors will install the temporary roof covering at no cost to the resident.

To get the help, owners must sign a “Right of Entry” form that allows Corps staff to assess the roof damage, and for Corps contractors to do the work. To obtain assistance under this program, the owner must sign a Right of Entry to grant access to their property.

If owners have evacuated from the area and are unable to personally come to the center, they can designate another person to sign the Right of Entry on their behalf. These designations can be delivered to the center by the designee. The designation must be in writing and include the owner’s street address, parish and signature before the Right of Entry can be completed.

For the latest on locations, dates and hours to sign a “Right of Entry,” or for answers to any questions related to Operation Blue Roof, please call toll free 1-888-ROOF-BLU (1-888-766-3258)

I was thinking about the check in thing and looked up tiredoflaundry's recent posting history.

She's fine. LOL!

The swaying part is worrisome, but I trust men who engineer their own homes...lol.

I called a Home Depot in Hialeah. They have tarp. They were just closing. They will open at 6 am EDT.

I'll try to buy some by credit card, and see if I can arrange for someone to put it on. Her taxi driver can come and take over if I am not making any progress.

THANK YOU for the tip!

Wal-mart sells tarps, in the camping section. Some are open all night and they all take plastic.

He seemed certain about his engineering of that house, but that swaying is worrisome to me.

He did say he had a room built entirely of concrete including the roof and he was 14 ft above sea level..I just hope the rest of the house survived

Suggest the Aunt also contact her insurance company and get their advice as to her responsibilities to mitigate damage.

Excellent advice. If her taxi driver can get her a prepaid disposable cell phone somewhere, if any are left, she might be able to do that.

You all have convinced me not to get the tarp first thing but wait till we contact insurance co, if we can, so we can prove to them we tried to do it the right way, and then do it ourselves when we can't get the Army Corp, FEMA, etc or the insurance to do it right away.

I used to have four tarps. Donated one from the cache, and bought two more for the folks who lost their roofs during Charley.
