Hurricane Wilma Live Thread, Part IV

Category Three Major Hurricane Wilma is barreling toward the Southwest Florida coastline. The storm is packing wind speeds of 125mph, moving NW at 20mph, with an enormous eye 65 miles in diameter. Landfall is anticipated shortly in Collier County between 6:00 and 7:00AM ET.

Storm surge flooding of 9 feet to 17 feet is possible along the coast near and to the south of where Wilma makes landfall. Storm surge of 5 to 8 feet is predicted for the Keys. The storm has spawned tornados throughout the Florida peninsula since yesterday evening.

Just heard from my mother-in-law in Deerfield Beach FL (between West Palm Beach and Ft Lauderdale)

Power's been out since 11am or so. I told her the official read was that it was a cat 2 when it passed her. She thinks it was bigger because ALL trees are down in her neighborhood.

From the Hurricane Huinter website's fact sheet, they measure winds two ways. One from instruments onboard the plane, and two, using dropsondes that have a parachute, GPS, and transmitter.

Either method will generate wind data referenced to a fixed position, not relative to the storm center.

Therefore, winds measured will have already factored in the storm's movement. The only way to get storm relative windspeed then is to take additional steps to add in the storm's velocity and recompute the raw data. That seems highly unlikely both because it involves a lot of extra work, and because it introduces additional elements of uncertainty.

The idea that measured windspeeds should be added or subtracted to storm motion velocity is apparantly widespread, but false.

I hope this isn't an omen of worse.

Any word on a people locator effort? All my friends/family have checked in from Broward and Miami-Dade except one in Davie, FL. It's getting dark and I don't like the pictures I see from that area.

Any help will be appreciated.

Terrible news about your family's property damage. Very sorry to hear that. Lake Okeechobee and Stuart took a pounding from Wilma, with memories and repairs still fresh from Frances and Jeanne. It is heartbreaking.

But even after Andrew, the phone lines didn't go down...so still asking for prayers.

My mother-in-law is north of Miami, and phone service is sporadic. I just got through to her, after several unsuccessful tries an hour previous, but she says her phone was dead for most of the time since 11am. They must be having network trouble

OTOH, it may be just an omen of what happens when AT&T throws in the towel and SBC takes it over.

With AT&T I was able to get through to her after Andrew and able to get through to a friend near Los Angeles after the big earthquake there.

We were without power all day ... all sorts of downed power lines in the eastern part of Sarasota. Fortunately, our power came back at 4 p.m.

Where in Sunrise was it? I moved from Sunrise in 1999. I lived in the Sawgrass Mills Area, and I have to go to Broward for Health care. I was just there Friday but in Hollywood. I told people in Broward all Summer that I had a gut feeling that they were going to get hit this year more than once and that I hoped for the best. It is so overcrowded and it takes forever to get anywhere.

Well, we're having some power outages down this way...why, who knows. My sister called and her block is blacked out, but my block is not. Probably a transformer blew or a tree fell on a power line.

We just got back from Pass-a-Grille. Took the guys as they thought they wanted to boogie board or skim board. The surf was unbelievable. There's a steady wind, I'd say 35 mph. The sand is whipping like crazy. Not surfing weather at all since the waves are so choppy from the wind, but the wind surfers are really hauling. Must be doing 30 mph across the waves, and getting lots of air.

Fun to watch, the guys had fun, the gulf was warm and they just body surfed.

Hard to believe that Wilma is way out in the Atlantic and there still that strong of a wind coming in off the Gulf.

To a weather guru, is it the cold front that's producing the winds, or remnants of Wilma?
