I saw a replay of it on our local NBC station. Al was out in the wind in Naples and it was blowing. There was a guy on the ground with his arms wrapped around Al's legs, trying to hold him steady. Then the wind appears to pick up a big more and Al goes down. A third man rushs out of the building to pull both of them back in.
It looked like the picture that KNBC was showing was not quite the same feed that the Today Show was broadcasting. It appeared to be a slightly larger view that included part of the doorway -- in addition to the "leglock" guy. The local KNBC announcer did say something about not hiding the full story from the audience.
Large water main break in Naples just reported. All of Naples is without water and power. Most of Gulf Shore Blvd. is under water.
Just reported downtown Naples under water as well...
Strong gusts hit, power on and off a few times, then heard transformers popping. Local effect or is this what central florida is getting now? Lights out at casa NVA in Palm Bay, saving ups to run the cable modem and running laptop off batteries. Hurricane lamp lit for first time this year, hopefully the last.
Freeper Ax reporting from Boynton Beach saying 60+ winds, trees down, and power out since 0730. Eye has passed and they are feeling back end of it now.
Info from Miami Ch.4 CBS -
Boil water order for;
Plantation, Pompano Beach, Tamaracc, Deerfield Beach
Just talked to my stepmom in Kendall (Sabal Chase) -- Power out since 7:30am.
In this case, as the storm moves to the east, the winds to the south of the eye are pushing away from land, not towards land. So Miami shouldn't get much surge from this.
Blue skies! Yay!
And it's COLD!!! BOOO!!
Just talked to an amigo in Miami. He's without power, and has been for a while. His mom's car got shelled by roof tiles, but only moderately; no windows broken.
Michelle Kosinski reporting in by phone from SW FL. Standby for video...
Ah, that Polish info-babe. I don't think she's got both oars in the water.
:^)
Did Marco or Everglades City get the expected storm surge?
High-rise damage will probably end up being the big story from FL on this storm. Lots of retirees in those, all along the SE FL coast. Not a good situation.
Here I am, live, in the middle of this category 5 hurricane, barely able to stand. I've lashed myself to this tre... Uh.. Michelle... how come those people are walking by you drinking cokes, and the sun is shining? Uhh... Matt... it's very windy here, but they wouldn't let me get into the windiest portions of the category 5 hurricane... Uhh... Michelle, it was barely a 3 when it made landfall.. Umm.. Matt... back to you and Katie from this strong category 5 storm. Katie: You know, Matt... we really need to fire her. Now. She makes us look more stupid that we already are.
Stuart update: They had the eye pass over with complete calm for about an hour. The back side of the storm has just started. While on the phone, my mother screamed as a transformer exploded. We ended the call quickly, and they are headed into the interior hallway. She is very frightened.
Power went out for awhile- back now but blinking. 40 mph with higher gusts- still pouring- getting water up on the porch now -first time I've ever seen it there. Dogs are refusing to go outside:)
Lights blinking- signing off for now.
Blue skies visible west from Tampa Bay. Still breezy.
Damn, that looks like downtown Houston after Alison.
Hi everyone! I just got back home a few mins ago and all is fine. 40-45mph gusts here with a lot of rain but not anything like what they are getting south of us. My prayers go up. Has anyone heard from laz lately? The tornadoes last night were worrisome to say the least. The storm was stronger than anticipated.
Glad to hear that. Said a prayer for him.
