I hear ya. I'm just saying. When you're around ppl who take Michael Moore seriously, you find yourself defending the president rather quickly. It reminds you of just how bad the alternative is. Sad but true.

---They won't lose the House or the Senate.--

Nope. Not going to happen. Miers will be confirmed and life in the Republican lane will go on.

It's pretty bad at FR when CNN is being used as a source for "real" information...

LOL...... Well it just maybe that's the best sources certain groups have at the current time.

I think the poll masters are slanting the results to get the numbers they want, that's why I don't pay attention to them and the Prez doesn't either.

I've never been polled.

Most polls, IMHO, are taken to create public opinion, not reflect it.

---"Few weeks ago even Steve Forbes said that pubs will likely lose the House in 06.

Steve Forbes thought he was going to be nominated to the presidency in 1996."---

I'm pretty solidly in the "withdraw Miers" camp, but that was funny. ;-)

I do think that, in states like NJ, where the GOP needs maximum turnout, the Miers thing might kill a rare opportunity for the GOP. Even if just 1% stay home because of anger, that could be crippling.

I am more than willing to concede that Bush will not withdraw Miers no matter what happens; but I think it's time for the Bush/Miers defenders to admit that this decision might do a lot more harm than originally thought.

I have worked with a very well organized group of Social Conservatives who put in a lot of admirable effort in 2002 and 2004. Let me tell you, just talking with the immediate 10-12 I know and talk to at all regularly, I am unable to find one person who doesn't feel totally distraught. I mean, the GOP isn't going to get a sniff of effort out of these guys (and ladies) in 2006. I'm afraid I'm with them.

I and they would likely never vote Democrat, but voter suppression of the base, even in the least, is a very bad thing. What hurts even more is when a certain percentage just give up (usually temporarily, I'll grant you). I see more of that hopelessness right now than anything else.

I can tell you, many of them were already swallowing a lot of anxiety about the disappearance of the Protect Marriage Amendment seconds after Bush's reelection. Now they just feel like they've been used. I don't feel "used" myself, per se; but I do feel like Bush and company have a Supreme Court blacklist, consisting of basically every name that folks on Free Republic would die for. I don't like that one bit.

There is so much harm to be done with this nomination. I just wish Miers would step aside; but if what her friends say about her insatiable ambition is true, I think we're in for a battle between Bush and much of the base that will last for months. Wounds that deep won't heal very quickly. It could be a long, long time before Bush gets a chance to redeem himself to the distraught, if he gets another SCOTUS chance at all. And Harriet Miers will at best have a handful of decisions for us to measure her by before next November. I fear it won't be enough for Bush to do his end zone dance and declare exoneration.

I hope that this works out well. I pray that Miers, if confirmed, will be everything we want her to be. But I just don't see it, at all. And if the folks I know share the sentiments of even 1% of the base nationally, we're in a lot of trouble all in the name of Harriet Miers.

So what did they poll this time, 57% Democrats again when only 37% of the electorate is registered Democrat? Spare me this news creation with these rigged polls. Funny we couldn't find a poll by any of these lefty media outlets when Bush's popularity was in the 50-60% range. Now that the media figured out if they just over-represent Democrats they can show Bush at 39% approval, they're all burning through their polling budgets at the speed of light.

Now the knee-jerk term of abuse on this thread appears to be "Bush haters" and "Miers haters."

I don't notice too many congenital Bush bashers among the people opposed to this nomination. Most of us are deeply disappointed precisely because we have supported Bush for the last five years. And I don't think any of us hate Miers. We just don't want her on the court.

Some of these figures on Bush are probably cooked, as usual. But I doubt whether they have much reason to cook the Miers and Roberts figures. There's a very large difference in the approval ratings for these two candidates. Does it mean anything? I don't know. Nobody cares if the leftists are ranting, but if the base is being alienated, that's a different story.

I can tell you, many of them were already swallowing a lot of anxiety about the disappearance of the Protect Marriage Amendment seconds after Bush's reelection.

You run with a very idealistic lot. First, any Marriage Amendment has to come out of the House. Second, long before the election, the House leadership had given a clear indication that a Marriage amendment would never get the requisite two-thirds to pass.

With all due respect, to take out your anger over Bush's action on your House or Senate rep is simply juvenile. I just don't get this mindset. I didn't like Bush raising taxes in 1991, but I would never vote against my Republican House member because of that.

It seems that mature thing to do is compartmentalize, not shoot the innocent.

Is anybody outside Bush's immediate family supporting Miers? Anne Coulter's latest column really lays it out against her.

Is this just the bait so that the "real" nominee will pass easier?

---"It seems that mature thing to do is compartmentalize, not shoot the innocent."---

But compartmentalizing includes "punishing" Senators who support the nominee, which doesn't help either.

If they are idealistic, it's because they trusted Bush when he ran on the Marriage Amendment. You'll forgive them (and me) if the trust issue is now, well, not working in Bush's favor.

That being said, I am still hoping for the best.

"Is anybody outside Bush's immediate family supporting Miers?"

2 Points:

1.) SurveyUSA is the only poll tracking daily reaction to the Miers nomination. Note their results as posted today:

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS ON HARRIET MIERS: Two weeks after President Bush nominated Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States, Conservatives and Republicans continue to tell SurveyUSA they have a favorable impression of Miers, at the same time a number of prominent Conservative Republicans lead the opposition to Miers. Democrats and Liberals continue to tell SurveyUSA that they have an unfavorable impression of Miers, at the same time those groups silently arbitrage whether the confirmation of a Justice Miers might be the best possible outcome they can expect from the hand they've been dealt. As of 10/17/05: 44% of Conservatives have a favorable impression of Miers, 12% unfavorable (a "Plus 32"). 16% of Liberals have a favorable impression, 39% unfavorable (a "Minus 23"). Miers is "Minus 9" Among Moderates, and "Minus 9" among Independents.

http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=34725585-9bed-4f35-a756-e9a23c7c39c7

2.) ALL of the recently released polls (including this one) indicate that the President's Republican base is holding firm at approximately 85% -- HIGHER than Ronald Reagan's average support!
