Game 2 of the ACLS left Chicago celebrating a 2-1 victory. Controversial strikeout didn't end the ninth..

It's easy to tell on these kinds of plays because you see the dirt & dust rising up (even if just a little) when the ball hits the dirt. There wasn't any because the glove was inbetween. The ump called him out and then seemed to back off for some peculiar reason.
Say, regardless of the ump's non-call of 'out', shouldn't the runner have been called out for running outside of the baseline?
Oh yeah, that's another rule that isn't enforced against the home team (witness that little rat weasel Lenny Dykstra running way out of the line to avoid the tag of Nolan Ryan late in the 1986 series that cost the Astros a win. But hey, I'm not still bitter or anything...)
Unless of course I get to see the Rocket win the pennant. :-)
Agreed. I would also be interested to know if that same catcher routinely rolls the ball toward the mound whenever an inning ends on a strikeout. I wonder if he nonchalantly rolled the ball toward the mound the way he did in order to say, "No, the ball didn't hit the ground", when in fact he knew it had.
What's with the clenched fist at reply #81?
I nominate you for dumbest non-troll post on FR this year.

That graphic says it all right there!!!!
That's the new SAFE!
Unbelievable.
Ditto. I'm a Yankee fan too, and if they aren't in it, Houston is my #2 choice (because I loved visiting Houston when I lived in San Antonio, and because they've never won...plus I still love both Roger Clemens and Andy Pettite....)
It has happened.
Blame cheating Piersinski. Like a welfare cheat.
Strike.
Here is the biggest lie... Ump said he always uses the fist raised motion for 3rd strike.... not true... I have Tivo... for those of you who recorded the game... go back to 3rd out of 8th Inning:
Konerco swing and misses for strike 3... umpire does the slash with his right hand indicating strike 3...
ball clearly hits dirt... Ump waits... Josh Paul tags Konerco out... then Ump points to Konerco lifts the fist and everyone leaves the field...
3rd out was not until Ump raised fist.
I can understand the ump making a mistake on whether the ball hit the dirt or not, but to call the guy out and then allow him on base...
