Its too bad for us that the only adviser WITH a pair has been busy, which allowed Andy Card to hold sway on this one. All the rest are women, not to fault them. Rove was supposed to have been against this pick. I don't think Bush will make this mistake twice. But, if Miers doesn't drop out, he might not get a chance to do it again.
Bush was busy with the hurricanes and Iraq. The staff has to take the blame this time around.
Jim, I honestly believe the President has done exactly that. If he really wanted to appoint a moderate, he could have done so -- there are plenty of those around!
" Whoever's advising the president on this needs to grow a bigger pair!!"
Amen to that.
The republican party for too long has been like the geeky kid at the school dance who's afraid to ask the cute girl if she wants to dance. Instead, he makes excuses as to why she'd never want to dance with him, and then goes home and curses his bad luck.
The Powers That Be in the republican party need to stop making excuses as to why they can't win and start working on ways to get the job done.
If the short list was only five women, and one of them was Miers, that in itself is a failure of this White House staff. Do they really expect us to believe there were only four other women deserving of consideration? I can name six or seven right off the top of my head, especially if 60-year-old women are in the running.
Including those with gonads too:)
While I agree that President Bush should have taken the fight to the Dems and nominated an openly conservative nominee, I'd define "conservative" as someone who interprets the Constitution as it's written, leaving "pro-life" as something that merely follows from that, as appropriate.
But regardless, what galls me is exactly what you said...the move he made is WEAK. With all due respect, even if she turns out to vote pro-life, this nomination has strengthened the opposition and is a bad one.
