The Republican base across the country looks more favorably on President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court than the cluster of conservative critics who are opposing her inside the Beltway, according to a Washington Times survey of state party chairmen.
snip
Eileen Melvin, chairwoman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, said she had just come from a meeting with state committee members in conservative Lancaster County, where she asked them what they thought of the Miers nomination. "They said we trust the president," she said.

In Washington state, party Chairman Chris Vance said he e-mailed information about Miss Miers, provided by the Republican National Committee, to a statewide list of 10,000 Republican officials and grass-roots activists. "The next day, I got less than 10 e-mails out of 10,000 from people who were upset with the nomination," Mr. Vance said.

Wishful thinking. He specifically stated that the court now has no member who was not a judge, and that the court benefits from members who were not judges.
This defeats the argument that Miers should not be confirmed because she has no "judicial track record...." a silly argument in the first place.

And yet Leo Leonard, head of The Federalist Society, has endorsed Miers That says more about Leonard than it does about Myers.

Great points. I think you are 100% right. Once she hits that seat, she will get softballs and kid gloves treatment and sail easily through. Between the RATS and RINO's its a done deal.
What a wasted opportunity.

I only ask, "Why Miers when there are so many QUALIFIED candidates out there?"It is the President who determines the qualifications...not the media, not the leftists on the Judiciary Committee, and not you.

How come you are all so sure that those we feel are better candidates didn't turn the job down??
Come on, you have to be delusional to really believe that someone like JR Brown would get thru the processes w/ the wussy rino senate we have - not one full set of testicles in the bunch!!
And, your statement was spin - I think if Jesus himself came out for Miers, you'd find some way to spin that as a bad thing. I just read on another thread that Harriet''s a satanist!! I think it's time to drop a few Prozac and chill!!

Spineless as usual. LOL
"Spineless" is usually the state of those on the court who dare disagree with Scalia.

I'm afraid that it's your thinking that is wishful. A "non-judge" applies to 300 million people, hardly an elevating qualification. Among non-judges, who would have picked Miers out of those hundreds of millions? Not I - and I doubt you would have, either, given the choice. Contrast this to the universal acknowledgement that whether or not you agreed with Roberts, his excellence has few peers.

Maybe as a whole we're 50% more conservative than the average Republican. Well, okay. That means that maybe 18% of Republicans oppose her, which is 82% support. Doesn't that still strongly support the heading that "GOP rank and file support Miers?"

Exactly. And no one else. Unfortunately for them both, there is a review of the candidate in which others get to participate.

I support Miers and I am a proud member of the GOP.
Think about it, of the last 7 members of the bench appointed to SCOTUS not one was an Evangelical. Of the 7 most turned tail and became liberals.

Unfortunately for them both, there is a review of the candidate in which others get to participate. This review will take place through a prism different than the one you are using...a fact that Bush and Rove already took into account.

Nonsense. To a person everyone I know has said one thing of this nomination: Wasted Opportunity.
You sound like the majority of 2.

Oh great, maybe instead of some of these idiots looking to foregin law we will now have someone looking to the Bible to interpret coyright law and criminal law.
It might surprise you to learn most of the original signers of the D of I had trained for the ministry, which involves considerable Biblical interpretation.
