GOP rank and file back Miers
The Washington Times ^ | 10/10/05 | Donald Lambro

The Republican base across the country looks more favorably on President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court than the cluster of conservative critics who are opposing her inside the Beltway, according to a Washington Times survey of state party chairmen.

Eileen Melvin, chairwoman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, said she had just come from a meeting with state committee members in conservative Lancaster County, where she asked them what they thought of the Miers nomination. "They said we trust the president," she said.

In Washington state, party Chairman Chris Vance said he e-mailed information about Miss Miers, provided by the Republican National Committee, to a statewide list of 10,000 Republican officials and grass-roots activists. "The next day, I got less than 10 e-mails out of 10,000 from people who were upset with the nomination," Mr. Vance said.

Considering that 7 of the 9 Justices were picked by Republicans, why should we worry? END SARCASM!

Since when do state party chairmen constitute "rank and file"?

Good point. I'm waiting for the hearings.

"GOP rank and file back Miers"

The rank are the rotten, the file doesn't have the sense to step out on their own and think for themselves.

When Democrats heartily ENDORSE someone, elephant ears had best stand up at attention.

I believe the article is dead on. The media is taking the opinions of a few well known conservatives and amplifieng this to create the image of a huge split in the Party. The reason is to depress and split the constituency in the hopes of turning them against their Party and staying home next election. It is similar to what they do in their phony polling.

The poll on Free Republic shows only 27.7% opposed to Miers, with the majority either supporting her or waiting for more information.

I know two of the "hate Miers" posters on FR voted for Gore in the 2000 election.

The level of support is only 5% higher. But to read this article you'd think opposition was 0.1%. Who isn't telling the truth?

You don't. Well you better start typing up some mass emails real quick. You don'ts are a bit behind and if you wait too long there may actually be a Senate hearing. And you don'ts want that.

Me either yet. I guess I'm not in the rank and file...maybe just rank...;)

I'm trying to remain open minded but if I had to vote as a Senator right now I would vote no. Suggestions that President Bush deserves a yes vote no matter what is known about the nominee is precisely the same logic that Hatch and Lott use to justify their Yes vote for Ginsberg, and that logic on it's face is insulting. If this person deserves a Yes vote let someone prove it so the vote can be intellectually justified and faithfully given. I am waiting for the hearings hopeing that proof will be forthcoming. I would like to believe she is what we have waited for...but I'm not there yet and "trust me" isn't enough.

That is because we out here in flyover country are stupid and not smart like the elitist of the beltway or northeast.

Elitism may have its place, but it isn't here and now.

Does this include the 25 Republican senators who've said they aren't so sure she's the one?

There's that term again..."inside the Beltway."

I've always dismissed the implications when I've heard it discussed on Fox Panel or other shows that things inside the Beltway are looked at in a completely different light as things in the rest of the country.

George Will made note of this when he said he hadn't talked to a single person "in Washington," and several other writers state similar things.

I think the hearings will be what sways the base, one way or another. We listen to pundits but at the same time, we (the American public in general) seems to have developed a discerning ear, recognizing media can't always be relied upon. (recent example...Katrina media hype)
