I believe the article is dead on. The media is taking the opinions of a few well known conservatives and amplifieng this to create the image of a huge split in the Party. The reason is to depress and split the constituency in the hopes of turning them against their Party and staying home next election. It is similar to what they do in their phony polling.

The poll on Free Republic shows only 27.7% opposed to Miers, with the majority either supporting her or waiting for more information.

I think most are willing to withold judgment until the hearings.

I believe your comment about the election is spot on. I will predict that if a bunch of Republican senators torpedoe this nomination that their punishment will be a Democrat controlled House and Senate in 2006.
