Franck & Miers [Mark R. Levin 10/03 09:50 AM] I understand Matt's point, as he's written so eloquently about it many times. But, in truth, we already know what's going on here, and that the president, despite a magnificent farm team from which to choose a solid nominee, chose otherwise. Miers was chosen for two reasons and two reasons alone: 1. she's a she; 2. she's a long-time Bush friend. Otherwise, there's nothing to distinguish her from thousands of other lawyers. And holding a high post in the Bar, which the White House seems to be touting, is like holding a high position in any professional organization. But it reveals nothing about the nominee's judicial philosophy. There are many top officials in the Bar who I wouldn't trust to handle a fender-bender. Also, early in his term, the president singled out the Bar for its partisan agenda and excluded it from a formal role in judicial selection. The president said he would pick a candidate like Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas, and he did not. We all know of outstanding individuals who fit that bill, and they were once again passed over. Even David Souter had a more compelling resume that Miers.

No, the comparisons to Souter aren't valid- there were a lot of reasons to believe Souter was at least fairly coinservative. What evidence do you have that she's pro-life. I can pretty much guarantee she will rule the same as O'Connor or more friendly to abortion.
You are letting your emotions make you into what you assert Pres Bush is. Twice you have belched this out. A stammering idiot. Such disrespect toward President Bush is uncalled for, even when stamping your feet and howling out your disappointment that he did not choose your perfect candidate for SCJ.
if Bush (being very pro life) picked a longtime friend with no record that was pro abortion then something is very wrong with the man
anybody have proof she is pro abortion?
Women have had to follow unique career paths, and her resume shows that sh accomplished a lot on her own. However, ture success comes with mentoring, in this case by Bush.
In general, I think Republicans treat their women better than the dems, though you wouln't know it from these threads this morning.
(She's a sacrifice. She will not be confirmed and both Bush and Miers know it. Bush's second nomination will be more conservative and Bush will fight for a confirmation.)
This makes no strategic sense. If she doesn't get confirmed, it will be conservatives (like myself) who sink her. If that happens, how would this strengthen the president for the next nomination?
W seems to want to please his enemies more than his friends. He schmoozes with Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton and throws Bill Bennett out the window. I'm sick and tired of him.
Do you really think POTUS would nominate somebody he hasn't personally vetted on the question? She's his WH Counsel and was his personal lawyer for years, right?
They have a long, personal and porfessional relationship.
Trouble for both sides is her lack of a paper trail, so it's a matter of trust. GWB is not GHWB. He will not make his father's same mistake.
yeah but Bush1 didn't know Souter did he?,, he was Sununu's boy
WORSE --- he was Rudman's "boy."
No, you are wrong. Bush said in his 2000 campaign he would veto exactly the type of CFR bill that campaign before him. That was a broken campaign promise. Check what he said in 2000
Give us some recognizable names of those "quite a few conservatives" who donated to Gore or Bentson.
Gore and Benston were clearly to the left of their Republican opponents. More germanely, neither Gore nor Benston supported juridicial originalism. If Miers is such a big originalist, as Bush maintains, why was she contributiing to those bozos?
(It is too early to tell and we just don't know, just like we don't really know how Roberts will turn out. So I think that Mark Levin is being too sweeping in his condemnation. Plus, a blank slate will presumably be easier to get confirmed without a fillibuster on the Roberts model.)
George W. is not acting like he won the election. The Democrats are being rewarded for their obstructionism. When Bork got "Borked" we got Souter as his replacement! Don't you see the similarities? We don't want a blank slate. A blank slate by definition has 50% chance of turning out to be liberal. Is this why we all slaved and sacrificed to get Bush elected? We deserved better. Instead of forcing the Democrats to show their true colors, George W. has put Conservatives, his base for heaven's sake, in a very difficult position.
My mother was a Dem also .. but never voted for a Dem after Carter
she didn't want to change parties .. but she also couldn't vote for them either
I've fallen for that too many times to fall for it again. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 17 times, shame on me.
Well, I thought he was pro-life, but after five years, don't you wonder how much he really belives in that? Hey, I worked 30 hrs/wk on his reelection as my town's city chair. But at some point you have to think a little bit. I look at her background, and I don't see someone who is conservative, at all.
Then vote against her, Senator. She might not make it. That will infuriate POTUS and he might come back with Janice Rogers Brown.
Well, he's wrong here. I trust Bush much more than I trust Levin.
He nominated him for the Supreme Court, didn't he?
Its all a game of chess and IMHO GWB has made the cleverest move he had available to him... how clever it is we don't really know yet, just as we don't know with the roberts choice. But then again, the DIMs probably don't either...
DIMS always try to portray GWB as dumb and mediocre and it seems like some folks at FR have succumbed to this view -- GWB shows himself to be far more subtle and capable than most people realize...
Besides the Mexico City policy, what has Bush actually done that is pro-life?
