Who Is Harriet Miers?
ABC News ^ | Oct. 3, 2005 | ABC News

Oct. 3, 2005 — Harriet Ellan Miers is White House counsel and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer in Texas. She first served in the White House as staff secretary and was deputy chief of staff before she was named counsel upon Alberto Gonzales' transition to attorney general.

When he was the governor of Texas, Bush once publicly introduced Miers as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."

Born and raised in Dallas, Miers earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and her law degree from Southern Methodist University. In addition to her legal career, she served one term on the Dallas City Council.

Miers, 60, broke barriers for women throughout her career. She reportedly was the first woman hired by the prestigious Dallas law firm Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, where she became a successful commercial litigator. She also became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985 and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association in 1992.

Miers met Bush in the 1980s, according to published reports, and she was counsel for his 1994 campaign for governor. He appointed her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.

Miers then was president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell and co-managing partner of Locke Liddell & Sapp before she joined the White House in 2001.

In addition, Miers was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Lawyers by the National Law Journal in 1998, and she received numerous other awards from groups including the Dallas Women Lawyers Association, the Anti-Defamation League and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers.

Again, I'm going on the fact that the President has known this woman for YEARS! I know what he has said about the type of person he'd appoint, and I'm going to trust him on this.

Some folks want to bail based on rumors and conjecture. I'm waiting to hear some FACTS about this woman, not ruminations based on some peoples' fevered imaginations.

LOLOL.....don't know whether to laugh or cry but in the end it's really fun to watch some people get bent out of shape at EVERYTHING the President does or says.

She knows that Bush wants a new Justice in the mold of Scalia and Thomas. She will be such a Justice

I tend to agree but who knows Bush wants someone in the mold of Scalia and Thomas? Has he publically stated so? What has he said that makes one come to that conclusion?

You know nothing of this woman. The childish wailing of so many uninformed posters diminishes this forum. When you know her, then you should comment.

Amen!!!!!

What do you know about this woman that makes you dislike this pick?

She donated money to Al Gore and Lloyd Bensten in 1988. (http://www.newsmeat.com/washington_political_donations/Harriet_Miers.php) She's a Bush cronie.

I would have prefered someone with a proven Conservative track record.

Bush has asked our soldiers for courage when deploying yet he shows none himself politically on the homefront.

The best part of this is that they can do NOTHING. All they can do is rant; the President has made his choice, and she will get confirmed.

I might be more leary of this choice if I didn't see the unappeasables out in full force. As it is, I automatically support her!

By the way, Bill Kristol just was on talking about how "she isn't a Scalia or Thomas" and "a lot of conservatives are demoralized."

I am beginning to think Kristol is a Freeper.

I'm disappointed... and I'm sure all clear-thinking conservatives are. Simply put, Bush backed down... he punted on first down.

To hell with him.

Come on, Bill, don't spoil the mass nervous breakdown going on here with common sense. One thing you will never see on FR is a "wait and see" attitude.

Not at all. FR has gone down hill lately. It is still better than sites like DU, LP, FU, etc. but not by much.

I felt better about Miers before I learned she donated to Algore, Lloyd Bentsen, and the DNC during the 80s while she was in her mid-40s...

My [first] knee jerk reaction is that he nominated a Michael Brown to the Supreme Court.

Someone who gets the job because of who they know.

This is the biggest problem with her. She's not going to be on the Court very long.

It's not just her age, she really doesn't look healthy. She is the same age as Bush and looks like she is his mother. I hoipe I'm wrong, but I don't expect her to last to 75.

Well, 60 can be good or bad, depending on what kind of a justice she is. Also, women generally live longer than men. Stevens was 55 when appointed, and he is still unfortunately ticking after a long 30 years.

I don't know if she is a conservative and the unknown element bothers me. In any event, she has never been a judge. I would hope for a nominee with extensive judicial experience, preferably on one of the Circuits of the Federal Court of Appeals.

It is Standard Operating Procedure on FR for people to act like a bunch of nut cases based solely on rumor and conjecture.
