So far two of the more outlandish justifications for this pick are that she wears a cross and has a degree in math.
You'd think we were about to vote for junior high class President.
To: Howlin
You said he renegged on his word. Where are the facts that prove that?
Harry Reid supports her, and suggested she would be acceptible. In other words, she is NOT a Scalia or Thomas.
You can know your weakness by how your enemy attacks you. The enemy isn't attacking.
We now know that the enemy is in the White House.

another unmarried blank slate nominated by a Bush.I wondered how long it would be before somebody commented on the fact that she wasn't married.
I'm not surprised it was you.
To: counterpunch
You can be disappointed (I am too).
But the problem comes with making assumptions based on rumors, and calling this a failure when that cannot possibly be ascertained at this point.
What I object to here is the presumption of failure based on speculation only, when........as I have said previously.........as the facts come in, they are supporting her conservatism and pro-life positions.
A little personal restraint is in order here.

All of us who predicted Bush would screw us on this pick were vindicated. And to all the idiots who gave us grief; how do feel now?Dizzy from spinning, I should think. This is a tough thing to spin into a positive.

That's old news. Leave it to Laura to give us that. Here's some newer news:
From Political Moneyline, contributions made by Harriet E. Miers in the 2000 election cycle:
$1,000 to Kay Bailey Hutchison for Senate Committee
$1,000 to Bush for President
$5,000 to Bush-Cheney 2000 Recount Fund
$1,000 to Bush-Cheney 2000 Compliance Committee
$1,000 to Dallas County Republican Party

She sees him as a Souter. No paper trail=no conservative. I suspect Miers could be the same. I doubt she will be a Souter. The president has worked with her at least 10 years, so she is not an unknown to him. Souter WAS an unknown to the first Pres. Bush. Big difference.

Another poster who knows more about her than the Prez, based on assumption and HUGH jumps to conclusion.
To: kellynla
I hate to say this, but I am going to urge Grassley to sand bag Miers. We cannot gamble on her and Bush blew it.
To: beckysueb
Sorry I could have been clearer too.

Why can't I? You don't even know about her and you're spinning.
And I hope you're perception of HER is better than your perception of ME.

I am disappointed this morning. What's even more disheartening is that when/if Ginsburg or Jones leave the bench, Bush will probably put his budy Gonzalez in!!! I want someone like Scalia and Rehnquist, not like Anthony Kennedy!

He can win the nomination. He COULD win the general if the GOP isn't so damaged by '08 that it resembles the Ohio GOP nationwide. I'm also worried we might lose the House and Senate.I already feel badly for Senator Rick Santorum. He needed a life line and this is an anchor.

"....Great point! We voted for President Reagan thinking he was "Mr. Right" and when he turned out to be "Mr. Reasonably Close" we didn't hold his few mis-steps against him!...."
When Saint Ron of the Palisades nominated O'Connor his administration already was in a halting and rapidly sinking second term. He was crippled by Iran-Contra and was basically punching the clock. O'Connor was a diversity hire intended to avoid the bruising taken in the Bork hearings and boost the flagging popularity ratings.
I don't hold it against RWR. But why make the same mistake twice? As I wrote in another post, history repeats itself, first as tragedy and then as farce.
For those keeping score, this is the farce. Bush just cooked the remainder of his second term. His base is demoralized and he looks weak to his enemies. He has saddled the court with a nobody who may vote correctly on some key cases but will provide no intellectual heft to the Scalia/Thomas/Roberts block. Unable to earn respect for her mind, she may drift left to earn respect from the WaPo in its favorite Lifestyle Section column: "how the conservative ideologue has grown since he/she moved to Washington. We are pleased to introduce the new, hip Harriet Meirs."
In the words of the immortal Robert Nesta Marley, from "I Shot the Sheriff:" "I grieve."

If she was a Dem in the 1980s, but then supported Repubs later, it indicates she is not on the same philosphical plane as Reagan type Republicans and her Republicanism runs as deep as the Bushes which isn't very deep at all.
But where is the link to indicate she was once a Democrat and supported Dems?
