I've never been married, I was once a flaming liberal Democrat and none of it implies I'm gay. We should wait til the President and his nominee get a chance to address the public. We should hold off firing the guns til we know more.

Not making any judgement, but I wonder if her temperament fits the mold of Carly Fiorina. That is, whether she might be the "legal-profession equivalent" of the business power-broker.

Oh well, if the choice has some basis in cronyism, I'm glad it wasn't Gonzales.

Why do you insist on labeling her a lib and him a sellout? President Bush has been totally consistent when it comes to moral and social values. Why do you assume he would work with someone for decades, know she doesn't share his values, and then appoint her to make the most important decisions in our society with regard to values?

For a long time, those on these boards have complained about the liberals' accusing Bush of playing politics every time he appeared b/4 a military audience, or spoke from a pulpit, or supported a conservative position (Shiavo, for example). Now you and others are doing the same thing.

Given how well he knows her, I assume he's assured she shares his values...why can't you at least give him that and then wait to hear her testify?

I think we will know how conservative she is by how loud the RATS scream. The louder they scream the more conservative she is sure to be.

You trust him. I am a skeptic based on experience. He's a demonstrable liar on "enforcing the border" and now his choices for the High Court.

Thomas and Scalia, his specifically chosen "ideal" candidates that he used to get elected and reelected are "movement conservatives" there isn't any guess work involved. He didn't pick the late Chief Justice as his example but could've. He's snubbing the base. We were played. This woman is no Scalia. No Thomas. Those examples, of Bush's own choosing, MEAN something.

When push came to shove he selected Roberts (with two adopted Latin American children) and now one of his Texan pals. That is *exactly* what I predicted in threads past since it is Bush's M.O.: he favors Latinos and Texans.

As far as her past donations and examples of "born again" Republicans like Reagan, Bill Krystal and others, you have to ask yourself about the importance of this selection. Those aren't SCOTUS appointees. Reagan was a known quantity, Krystal's writings are a known quantity. This person is a public mystery.

You have to ask yourself where she is *now* and how far left she'll move over the coming years on the Court? Her other donations were to fellow Texans such as Kay Bay, Phil Graham and her boss, W.

Bush is saying out of all the qualified people he is picking someone he's hoping the Dems will let slide.

She can be seen as a crony in a period when the administration is being criticized for perceptions or actual crony-ism.

What I see here on this topic are a pile of apologists who are willing to accept any name Bush tosses out.

There were better choices out there than Harriet Miers.

Perhaps, but I'll reserve President Bush the judgement to pick his own nominees, and not some clown who's spent every waking moment hating the guy no matter what.

I don't think she is the pick. When Roberts was named, we all thought one of the Edith's would be one of the justices, no one knew it was Roberts until he was named.

You are only half right. The Edith rumours prevailed in the last day or two, but in the very last hour before the actual announcement, the rumour was Roberts without deviation, just like this final hour before the announcement has been solid Miers. You should trust the rumur of that final hour.

I'm no Bush Hater, but this doesn't sound too promising. There were better choices out there than Harriet Miers.

I am not either. I was 100% behind the Roberts pick, but if Harriet Miers is the pick, I am going to start working for Hillary CLinton and joining the DU drive to impeach Bush. This is 100% unacceptable bullshit. Bush is a lying sack of crap if Harriet is the pick.

Peach, I almost always support the POTUS, but this is one where I gotta call it the way it is. This opening on the SCOTUS presented a great opportunity. With Luttig, McConnell, Garza and Brown to choose from, yhis is not a bold pick. Bush will suffer from this one.

I certainly don't think she is gay, and I agree that everyone should calm down. I think I just said it to another poster. I'm sorry to hear you were a flaming liberal, but glad you were never gay. :-)

I am in agreement with many that this is not the strongest pick (if true). It might be a fine pick, maybe even a great pick, but not a strong pick. I think Pres. Bush is misunderestimating his political base and his supporters.

You should trust the rumur of that final hour.

\ And if true, GOPers will start working to impeach Bush immediately.

You make no argument, just protest, with useless innuendo.

I was raised in a Democrat household in the south. When I was young, I listened to a young Jesse helms, on WRAL radio. He was a Democrat.

I campaaigned for Bobby Kennedy before he was shot. I even helped McGovern. When Jimmah Carter came along, I voted for him.

But, during his reign, he hurt the country through his total incompetence. I voted for Ron Reagan next.

Ronaldus Maximus turned many old time Democrats into Republicans. His straight shooting style, and his love for this country gave back some pride in the wake of Vietnam. Our country was at a low ebb in national commitment. RR changed that.

With his famous "Mr Gorbachev, tear down that wall" speech, he solidified the feelings of most of us older, disillusioned, VN vets. His successor was GHWB. Prez #41. He was a wishy washy dude, conservatively speaking, and usually ruled by concensus. He did little to further RR's legacy.

I voted for him anyways, again, in 1992, but we got Bubba. The Pubbies indicted Bubba (impeached) for breaking the law, which he had clearly done. The Republicans were unable to make it stick. We had Bubba for 8 years, and had the single largest tax increase in history to start it off.

During the 90's, we had a run-up in the stock market, driven by greed and avarice, never seen on such a large scale. Lying had become so rife in politics, that it bled over into business. We saw the financial scandals come home to roost, and billions of dollars disappear, never to be seen again. People's life savings, literally were swept into the trash, along with stock certificates from worthless IPO's and such. Loral, and many others, gave China the keys to the family secrets, with Bubba's help..

We got rid of Bubba, and managed to elect W. What did we get? We got Ashcroft as AG. How many indictments have been brought against Clintoonians for their illegal activities. On this board today, we see a report being bandied, that shows how the Clintoons misused their power, with IRS, and others. Indictments to come? HaHaHa... sure. I've got a bridge to sell you, if you think so.

Our Republican President submitted a budget, with more spending, than ever before. It has continued unchecked. Now, he throws out 60 billion dollars as a down payment on a spending program likened to the Marshall plan, as if its pocket change. (I know the arguments, but it is still dollars and cents, and it ain't his...).

I bring all that to your attention to say that credentials, and titles mean nothing. What matters is what you do with them.

I finished high school mid-year and went active duty in the Navy Reserve in February, 1966, just in time to spend two years on a can chasing carriers, off the coast of VN. I got out, and went home to NC.

I am no longer a Republican, though I sat down to lunch with Jesse Helms, and Dan Quayle. I bought my seat at that lunch, with a $1000 donation to the Republican Party. Jesse was running for re-election, against Harvey Gantt, the black D mayor of Charlotte. Jesse won. He wore the Republican hat.

I wouldn't give W he same courtesy. I will not donate anytime soon, to the Republican Party (though I do contribute individually to some). I resigned. The leadership aren't conservatives, like I have grown to understand. They are panderers, just as is they had a D behind their name...

Exactly. I'm open minded. A lot of Bush picks have turned out to be pretty good. So I'm not saying if Miers is the pick she's necessarily the one that comes to people's minds but she satisfies the politics nicely. Perhaps Karl Rove can fill in people down the road if she's the one the President does in fact introduce to the nation this morning.

Not the strongest pick?????? Shoot, Harriet is as bad as O'Conners. This pick absolutely stinks, and will turn me from a Bush supporter to a Bush hater.
