I don't think the navy used mortars. That's strictly for ground pounders in the army or marines. I know of NO such shell that is six feet in length! This must have been some sort of inert naval artillery shell. Being DE-MILLED (rendered inert) I don't know what they might use it for.

After looking at the info. for the USS Wisconsin...I am wondering if they were trying to describe a Tomahawk or Harpoon missile which are listed as having been used on the Wisconsin. And since it is now a museum....maybe there are misc. ordinance that they have as examples on board.
