The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

RE: Norman, OK bombing:

According to KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City, from the 6 pm broadcast:

Joel Hinrichs has been spending most of his time over the past few months at the Norman Mosque. This is important because Zacarias Mousoui also spent time there. The second detonation that many reportedly heard, indeed was NOT another bomb. It was however, chemical compounds to make bombs. An airline ticket was found in his apartment, destination: Algeria. The name on the ticket links back to Hinrich's roommate, Fazelle Cheema (a Muslim). They report that 5 others were reportedly "involved." In what capacity they were involved, News 9 doesn't know. They are committed to staying on top of the story.

Wow, honestly, this is impressive stuff for a local news channel.

Spokesman for Taliban held in Balochistan
By Our Staff Correspondent

QUETTA, Oct 4: The law-enforcement agencies have arrested Latif Hakimi, the chief spokesman of Taliban Movement with five other Taliban suspects from Balochistan. “Latif Hakimi has been arrested and was under interrogation,” Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, the Federal Interior Minister confirmed to media men, on Tuesday.

According to sources, Latif Hakimi was arrested three days back from a house in the outskirts of Quetta with five other people,” sources said and added that a satellite and two mobile phones and a fax machine was recovered from his possession.

Sources said that law-enforcement agencies and some senior officials raided a house where Hakimi was found and was taken into custody.

He was later shifted to unknown place along with five other Taliban suspects for interrogation. Some sources said that he was shifted to Islamabad. However, no official was available to comment.

Agencies add: Hakimi has been the main spokesman for the Taliban, who were ousted by US-led forces in 2001.

He was frequently in touch with reporters, speaking by satellite telephone from an undisclosed location.

Hakimi often made outlandish claims on behalf of Taliban fighters, saying they had inflicted huge casualties on US and Afghan government troops.

But his information was also, at times, very accurate.

Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said Hakimi was arrested in Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan.

“We’re interrogating him and we expect to get some important information from him,” he said.

Asked if Hakimi would be handed over to the United States, as have other Taliban and Al Qaeda militants arrested in Pakistan, Ahmed said: “First we will interrogate him and then we will see.”

An official in Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s office welcomed the news.

“We are grateful for his arrest. Hakimi was someone who claimed the deaths of innocent people,” Khaliq Ahmad said. “We hope that his arrest leads to more arrests.”

He could not say whether Afghanistan would request that he be handed over to Afghan custody. A US military spokesman in the Afghan capital, Kabul, said he had no immediate comment.

Hakimi last called Reuters on Monday at around 4pm to deny an Afghan government report that 31 Taliban had been killed in fighting with government troops.

“They’re lying,” Hakimi said. “We were the attackers and we killed 11 Afghan soldiers. Only three Taliban were injured.”

The Afghan Defence Ministry said eight government troops had been wounded.

PROBLEMS: Hakimi frequently vowed unending jihad against US and government forces and angrily rejected suggestions of reconciliation.

Late last year, responding to a US call for the Taliban to lay down their arms, he said peace would not resolve Afghanistan’s problems.

“They are the criminals for destroying our homeland,” he said of the United States.

“Our problems will not be solved through peace. None of the mujahideen will compromise with them and the mujahideen are standing against the enemies.

Terror-themed soap for Ramadan on TV (AFP)
5 October 2005

DAMASCUS — Syrian television is to launch a soap opera inspired by terrorism for the holy month of Ramadan that begins this week across the Muslim world.

“It’s a work about society and the innocent victims of terrorism,” director Najdat Anzur told AFP ahead of the first broadcast Tuesday.

In the 30-episode series, a group of Jordanian, Lebanese, Moroccan and Syrian families living in a residential complex in Saudi Arabia see their lives overturned by a terrorist attack.

“Our life is influenced by the phenomenon of terrorism,” Anzour said.

“The Arab world is going through a period that it is not yet ready to face up to,” the Syrian film and television director added. He said the series was also about terrorism of thought and extremism towards others.

Taliban Spokesman: Chief in Afghanistan
By NASEER KAKAR
Wed Oct 5, 9:59 AM ET

QUETTA, Pakistan - A detained Taliban spokesman has told his interrogators that the militia's fugitive chief, Mullah Mohammed Omar, is hiding in Afghanistan and is in contact with top commanders, an intelligence official said Wednesday.

Mullah Hakim Latifi, who has often claimed responsibility on behalf of the Taliban for attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces, was arrested earlier this week in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said.

Latifi was not a prominent figure in the Taliban while it was in power in Afghanistan, only becoming a media contact after the ouster of the movement in a U.S.-led war in 2001. His exact ties to the Taliban leadership are not known.

"So far, he has told interrogators that Mullah Omar is alive, he is in Afghanistan and he remains in contact with senior aides by satellite phone," said the Pakistani intelligence official, who was involved in the raid to arrest Latifi in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secretive nature of his job.

Some Pakistani officials said Latifi was arrested Tuesday, but the intelligence official said he was detained Sunday at a home in Quetta's Newi Killi neighborhood. The announcement of Latifi's arrest had been delayed because he was being interrogated about other Taliban leaders, the official said.

Four "low-level" aides of Latifi were arrested from several other homes in Newi Killi, the official said.

Intelligence agents seized two satellite phones, two Pakistani cell phones, Taliban literature, audio cassettes and CDs containing films of Taliban operations, he said.

Pakistani officials described Latifi as a Taliban spokesman. But information from Latifi in the past has sometimes proven exaggerated or untrue. Afghan and U.S. military officials say he is believed to speak for factions of the rebel group.

Afghanistan welcomed Latifi's arrest. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sometimes been strained because of Kabul's suspicions that rebels are using Pakistan as a staging area for cross-border attacks. Pakistan denies it.

Rebels are active in the volatile south and east of Afghanistan, and have stepped up attacks this year. More than 1,300 people, including hundreds of militants, have died in the past seven months.

Pakistan was once a supporter of the Taliban, but withdrew its backing and became a chief ally of the U.S.-led coalition forces that ousted the militia, which refused to hand over al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.

While driving today, out in the middle of nowhere, no chemical plants etc. I suddenly smelled something like chlorine. It made my nose burn and my mouth water [sort of like when you're about to throw up] There were no cars or trucks on the road in either direction at that time. It was gone in about 15 seconds.

It's probably tinfoil time. I actually began looking up to see if there were any planes in the sky. Nothing?? It's farm and ranch land so I guess it could be anything.
