The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

I remember back a few years ago (maybe even 4-5 years) there was another case of shots fired at cars on I-25. At least one person was injured. I'm sorry I don't recall more details. The incident I'm speaking of was further north than the event yesterday...

Park Ave. is the exit you take just at the North end of the city to go to the Rockies Stadium and LoDo (nightclub area). The neighborhood to the West of the exit isn't the best in town, although it gets worse a little farther south, closer to the Broncos stadium and past that...

You may be right, but it seems just about everyone else, except his father (taqqyia) knew of his admiration for Osama.

"His uncle, Tahir Pervaiz, told the Pakistani daily Dawn: “Osama bin Laden was Shehzad’s ideal and he used to discuss the man with his cousins and friends in the village.”

Thank you for alerting us to your new post.

Interesting reading, looks like we draw even closer to war.

Rush Limbaugh opened his program with the announcement that the UN had passed a resolution against Syria.

LOL, Said it won't mean anymore than all of them that were passed against Iraq over the years.

Growing Concerns Over Nigerian Crash

There is growing evidence that the Oct. 22 airplane crash in Nigeria that killed all 117 people on board--including a U.S. Special Forces officer, top counter-terrorism officials of the Obasanjo government and senior regional security officers--was sabotage, not accident. Senior Nigerian officials are now saying publicly that there was an explosion in the air, before the aircraft, which had recently passed inspection, crashed to the earth. The lastest official statements can be found here.

At least one previously unknown group from the troubled Niger Delta region has taken credit for the downing, but the claim has been disavowed by other groups, and there seems to be little indication that any are legitimate. There are also conflicting reports over whether the black box has been found. Numerous international teams will be arriving in coming days to comb over the remains of the wreakage, but it appears the site was not properly secured in the days immediately after the crash, so it is unclear if anything of interest has been disturbed, removed or destroyed. But the blowing up of a commercial airliner would mark a dangerous new phase of the unrest in Nigeria, whether it be by international criminal syndicates, Islamic terrorist operating in the country, disgruntled armed groups in the oil-rich Delta region or any combination of the above. Go here to read more.

The remaining four specialists from Iran are
expected to receive certificates before the
end of this year, Ivchenko said noting that
in all, the center had trained some 700
Iranians. They took theory and practiced
with the simulator which allows for
emulating the process of running the
nuclear reactor.

Iranian repair engineers and specialists in
various branches then had practice at the
fourth reactor of the Balakovskaya nuclear
power plant. Russian specialists will guide
them through training at the Bushehr
reactor which slightly differs from Russian
analogs.

Laura, I brought back the above from your posts, everyone needs to see it, as there are some who still think that the terrorists do not have the knowledge to make a nuclear bomb.

I hope that you will make a seperate thread of this post, as it tells us how willing Russia is to not only sell the nuclear supplies but will train them to use them.

How does one get a list of the students, from other countries, that russia has trained?

India via UPI:
Terror acquires global dimension in India
NEW DELHI, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Saturday's serial blasts at three of the busiest markets in India's capital of New Delhi is the first ever evidence that terrorism here has acquired global dimension as carnage was carried out jointly by Lashker-e-Toiba and dreaded international terror outfit al-Qaida, said Indian terrorism and strategic affairs expert Monday.
"The group Islami Inquilabi Mahaz that has claimed responsibility for Saturday's bomb blasts in Delhi is another name of Lashker-e-Toiba and is the best known as (a) successor terrorist outfit of Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaida," said Ajai Sahani, executive director of the Indian Institute of Conflict Management, a New Delhi based think tank.
He said the modus operandi clearly establishes that the operation was carried out with the active participation and logistic support provided by al-Qaida. Sahani said this is the first ever operation in India that was executed in al-Qaida's style.

(Long article details several arrests of the suspected terrorist, and reasons behind his arrest. Also quotes from a military investigator regarding the posting of bond in this case. This originally took place back in April of this year, but this article was published today. - LR)
LACK of an antiterrorism law in the country, not intervention by media, caused the release of terror suspect Tyrone del Rosario Santos, alias Dawud Muslim Santos, ABS-CBN said in a statement yesterday.
The broadcasting giant issued the statement after the Inquirer reported that one of ABS-CBN’s broadcasters, Julius Babao, had been named by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the one who provided bail for Santos.
(...)Asked if the military did not investigate the matter further, the officer said it did and learned that the bail had come from Babao.
"Sa kanya galing 'yun (The bail money came from him)," he said.
(...)But Babao has categorically denied posting bail for Santos.
The broadcaster said it was audio expert Jonathan Tiongco who arranged for the bail. Environment Secretary Michael Defensor had presented Tiongco to the public in August in an effort to prove that the "Hello Garci" tapes were fake.
"Tiongco offered to help because he said Santos had been framed. I merely connected them, that's all," Babao had said.

Russia:
Teenager detained on terrorist charges
Prosecutors on Monday appealed the acquittal earlier this year of a Dutch-Moroccan teenager suspected of plotting attacks on politicians or government targets, just two weeks after he was arrested again for planning what appeared to be a suicide assault.
Samir Azzouz, 19, was freed last April when a court found insufficient evidence that he had prepared attacks on Schiphol international airport or the Dutch nuclear reactor. He was convicted of lesser charges of illegally possessing a pellet gun and ammunition clips, but was immediately released because he had been jailed for longer than his three-month sentence.
(...)Azzouz was arrested again during an anti-terror sweep in three Dutch cities Oct. 14, along with five other men and a woman. It was the third time in two years he has been arrested for suspected terrorist activities.
At an initial hearing two weeks ago, prosecutors disclosed they had found a "farewell" video Azzouz had prepared for family and friends, similar to videos left by suicide bombers in the Palestinian territories and Iraq.

Contributors to terrorism must be stopped, says Musharraf

* Denies haggling on opening LoC
* Says Israel must be engaged for solution to Palestine
* Says he supports demilitarisation
LAHORE: President Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday that any country contributing to terrorism and militancy must be stopped.
In an interview with the Saudi newspaper Arab News, Musharraf urged a reconciliatory approach in international relations, but was adamant on the issue of extremism. “Let’s put an end to terrorism, extremism and militancy,” Musharraf told Khaled Almaeena of Arab News. “If the actions of any country are contributing to suicide bombings, militancy and extremism, they must be stopped.” The president advised the US, Syria and Iran to refrain from confrontation and adopt a reconciliatory approach in international relations. He said that confrontation with Iran was not possible for the world community at present. “I tell (the US administration) that we have to close fronts,” Musharraf told Arab News. “We cannot afford so many fronts. We have a front in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Kashmir. Let us close all these fronts because they are affecting the Muslim world.”

India:
'Top Pak army officials abetting terrorism'
Monday, October 31, 2005, New Delhi: Pakistan may have been quick to denounce the Delhi blasts, but Indian Army and the intelligence believe that senior officials of General Pervez Musharraf's regime, especially top army men, are actively abetting terrorism.
"The growing desperation of Pakistan-based terrorist organisations and an influential section of the Pakistan army officers with fundamentalist leanings frustrated by the Indo-Pak peace process might be one of the reason behind the recent spurt in terrorist strikes in India," said a well-placed intelligence official.

Unfortunately, you are correct about that. The 2 1/2 years I lived in West Denver were frightening. I don't know about DAILY shootings, but in the summertime during the wee hours of the morning, I heard a fair share personally. On one occasion a young man was murdered just a few blocks from my house...

I do know that helicopters with search lights hovering above my house and sweeping through my backyard were an almost daily occurrence...

I didn't see too much evidence of gang activity like you might expect, but then again my kids did not attend the public schools.

Illegal immigration as you pointed out is a huge problem in the area. Mostly problems related to health-care costs (and treatment policies), as well as uninsured driver problems. Twice we had our license plate stickers stolen, and it was a regular occurence to have either stickers or plates stolen in the parking lot of the store I worked in...

Can't tell you how glad I am to be out of there!

UPDATE on Orlando Middle School:

They are now reporting that it was NOT a pipe bomb, nor any type of explosive at all... I've updated the FR Thread with the new article from the Orlando Sentinel.

Here is an excerpt:
"Investigators later determined that an electrical device failed, causing a mechanical explosion in a heating unit, according to the Orlando Police Department."

They offered no explanation for why police initially said they were "SURE" the device had come through the window. (Wondering if there was broken glass?) Hmmm...

We make the trek to Denver about a dozen times a year. We have season Bronco tickets and go to most of their home games. The rest of the trips are for business.

Sadly, Denver has changed for the worse over the past couple of decades. I refuse to spend the night there. We usually stay in Cheyenne, Fort Collins or Loveland. Greeley is getting totally overrun by a very undesirable element, as well. There are some really nice areas in Denver, unfortunately you usually have to drive through some bad ones to get to them.
