The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

How effective are flu shots?

SNIP:Two years ago, for example, the flu shot protected nearly half the healthy adults who got it. But only 38 percent of those at high risk because of chronic illness were protected by the immunization. This was due in part to the fact that the vaccine that year was not a close match for the dominant strain of influenza.

But even in years when the vaccine matches the various types of flu virus circulating in the community, immunization for the elderly may not be as effective as most people think. A study of mortality records for the past three decades shows that death rates from the flu among older people have not changed much during that time. Over the same period, there was a dramatic increase in the rate of flu vaccination, from 15 percent to 65 percent. The investigators concluded that flu shots do not protect this vulnerable population particularly well (Archives of Internal Medicine, Feb. 14, 2005).

A systematic review of many studies of flu-vaccine effectiveness suggests that vaccinating elderly people in nursing homes is about 23 percent effective in protecting them from flu-like illness (The Lancet, Oct. 1, 2005). According to the researchers, "In elderly individuals living in the community, vaccines were not significantly effective against influenza, influenza-like illness, or pneumonia"

The Iran situation sure has me concerned. This guy just might be crazy enough to actually start something. Glad to see Tony Blair taking the lead and hope and pray the threat is not allowed to continue.

Refresher - Night of Determination article

Several Snippets: The fate of the world for the next Islamic year, if bin Laden has his way, will include the nuclear destruction of the United States.

The seven cities targeted by al-Qaida for nuclear destruction are New York, Washington D.C., Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Chicago.

Ramadan began Tuesday, Oct. 4, and ends Nov. 2. The Night of Determination will occur Oct. 29.

Another day I personally have concern about is November 9th - my calendar has a crescent moon on it. Moonsighting - with UK Fatwa noted

Google for FATWA: World Islamic Front Statement Urging Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders ... ruling (fatwa) requiring the killing of Americans, both civilian and military. ... with Allah's order, we issue the following fatwa to all Muslims: ...

Bubonic Plague Info

Using the flea as a weapon

Facts about fleas

To answer your question somewhat: Fleas enjoy temperatures in the seventies and like 70 to 80 percent humidity. They do not do well at high altitudes. In most areas these restrictions make flea allergy a seasonal problem, rearing up in the spring and summer. Animals residing in southern states may have fleas and the resulting allergic reaction year round.

Fleas are active from 45 degrees Fahrenheit to about 85 degrees. Optimal is about 70 degrees when used to transmit plague as a bio weapon.

I live at 4600 ft in Pocatello. We never seem to have flea problems. When I lived in San Diego, the flea problem was an issue all year.

Since Denver is at 5,280 feet, I was wondering how fleas could survive and spread bubonic plague at that altitude.

Yes, but are you standing on your left foot while holding a kumquat in your right hand at the summit of the sacred mountain? If not... Your sighting is invalid and bad bad bad!!!

From the link about Bubonic Plague:

In septicemic plague there is bleeding into the skin and other organs, which creates black patches on the skin, hence the name ( The epidemic form of bubonic plague experienced during the Middle Ages when it killed nearly half the people of western Europe ) Black Death.

Untreated septicemic plague is universally fatal, but early treatment with antibiotics is effective ... reducing the mortality rate to around 15% (USA 1980s).

People who die from this form of plague often die on the same day that symptoms first appear.

With pneumonic plague infecting lungs came the possibility of person-to-person transmission through respiratory droplets. The incubation period for pneumonic plague is usually between two to four days,

but can be as little as a few hours.

The initial symptoms of headache, weakness, and coughing ... are indistinguishable from other respiratory illnesses.

Without diagnosis and (antibiotic) treatment the infection can be fatal in one to six days; mortality in untreated cases may be as high as 95%.

"my calendar has a crescent moon on it".

Neither one of my incompetent calendars show a crescent moon. This morning though, in the dark, it was just a silver sliver of a moon . . .

"Man Charged In Fake Flu Shot Case
Shots Contain Purified Water"

POSTED: 4:56 pm CDT October 28, 2005
UPDATED: 5:15 pm CDT October 28, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "HOUSTON -- A man was charged Friday, accused of intentionally administering fake flu shots to hundreds of ExxonMobil employees, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Iyad Abu El Hawa, 35, is accused of attempting to defraud Medicare by giving fake flu vaccines, according to U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg. Officials said El Hawa substituted a purified form of water for the vaccine.
Investigators said the bogus flu shots were given at an ExxonMobil health fair on Oct. 19 and 20 at the Baytown refinery. About 1,100 people received them.
According to court papers, El Hawa admitted to giving the fake shots to the ExxonMobil employees and also to 14 senior citizens at a La Porte nursing home last Friday.
He also told federal agents he had done it other times, as well, officials said."

Focus on temperature ranges, not altitude. Denver has ideal flea temperature ranges from May to September. Denver also has lots of precipitation in that time frame.

When we lived there in the 70's, there were prairie dogs in the fields near the foothills and most certainly prairie dogs continue to be one of the prime carriers of fleas and plague.
