The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

But then orange would be more than sufficient, one would think. FoxNews said that they were already on orange and raised it FROM orange to this "enhanced orange".

kgo.com is a San Francisco radio station, you can listen on the computer to it.

I listened to the 1 am news, there was not a word about an increase in the alert.

I had heard earlier that the Bart systems, an above ground
subway/train (I think) were being given extra protection, due to the New York subway alert.

When I listened to the San Francisco news on KGO.com, they said that the Lodi guys trial had been delayed for three months....

There was something about the father and son, but the static
was bad and I couldn't hear it.

I am listening to Las vegas now, maybe I will hear something
from the callers, as they don't do local news on KDWN, except for the weekly early show.

Iraq Sunni leader urges Ramadan ceasefire, US talks

BAGHDAD - A prominent leader from Iraq's
Sunni Arab minority called on Friday for the
United States and Iraqi insurgents to cease fire in
the holy month of Ramadan as a prelude to
direct talks between Americans and the guerrillas.

Saleh al-Mutlak, a secular nationalist who was involved in negotiating a draft constitution,
said a coalition of Sunni political groups close to insurgents was ready to promote such a
dialogue to end the bloodshed that has ravaged Iraq since 2003.

"I call on the U.S. forces and the resistance to cease fire at once out of respect for
Ramadan," Mutlak said, adding that he was also urging the U.S. military to free thousands
of mainly Sunni detainees held on suspicion of guerrilla activity.

"The fighting should stop," Mutlak, who represents the National Dialogue movement, told
Reuters. "We have fought for two-and-a-half years and the problem is it doesn't work."

Though such talk may be welcomed by beleaguered U.S. troops, Washington has in the
past insisted it will not negotiate with the rebels and insists that the once dominant Sunni
minority cannot thwart majority rule by threats of violence.

Nor, Mutlak conceded, would any ceasefire involve foreign al Qaeda fighters who he said
were intent on a Sunni Islamic state.

Within a week or so, several groups would meet to formalise the proposal, he said,
declining to name them; Sunni politics since the fall of Saddam Hussein have been marked
by a fluid mix of secular and clerical groups, support for which, as they mostly boycotted
the last election, is hard to gauge.

"Our political programme is close to the resistance," Mutlak said. "The only difference is we
don't carry guns ... So if the Americans can reach an agreement with the Iraqi National
Dialogue, that will be close to the resistance demands."

REFERENDUM

The ceasefire call came a week before a referendum on the constitution, which Mutlak and
many other Sunni leaders say may lead to the break-up of Iraq into warring regions and civil
war between them, the majority Shi'ites and ethnic Kurds.

A meeting on Saturday among Sunni leaders would assess whether to call on people to
boycott the ballot or to go to the polls and vote "No" in an effort to veto the constitution by
securing a big vote against it in three of Iraq's 18 provinces.

Sunni groups wanted a united front, he said, and might urge a boycott if they feared the
vote would be rigged against them.

Mutlak conceded that U.S. officials have been sceptical of similar proposals he and others
have made in the past but noted that Washington had acknowledged previous attempts to
open dialogue with people linked to the insurgents.

"We must find a political solution," he said. A ceasefire during Ramadan, which began this
week, "should be a start for direct negotiations between the two sides".

"Everybody is getting tired in Iraq," Mutlak said.

I don't recall the details, but a year or more ago, a man was arrested in a navy uniform at least 2 times, for boarding the British Navy Ships and Bases.

G'morning, nw_arizona_granny...well your post certainly opened my eyes this morning. Hope it opened up the "eyes" of our DHS and British equivalent to DHS!

ITALIAN police were investigating last night why a suspected al-Qaeda hijacker would smuggle himself halfway around the world locked inside a shipping container with its own bed and toilet.

Now, THAT is tenacious and shows the need to be even and ever more vigilant.

Police said last night that they were acting on "certain information" when he was held by Immigration officers at Crown Point International Airport on Thursday. Police described him as being "a subject of interest" and said he had certain "literature" in his possession.

Someone mentioned earlier that we need to hear more about these successes. After 9/11, President Bush said we would hear about some things but there were some things we would never know about - or not hear about for quite a while - due to operational reasons.

Long story short: whenever we were behind at work, we'd give the manager as much as we had as quickly as we could to "feed the lion." It reassured him we were "on it" and gave him something to work on so we could finish without his interruptions of "are you done yet?"

For a different reason, I think the citizens of coalition nations, "the lion," need to be fed.

If more people could see that the WOT is ongoing and could see the successes (and get a hint at what evil we are facing), maybe we would be a bit more vigilant and have a greater respect for the difficulty of fighting an ideology rather than a defined country.

If Homeland Security showed regular successes without compromising ongoing investigations, perhaps there would be less carping in the press (ugh....who am I kidding there?!) and more citizen respect for the people who have an awesome job to do. There might be less snarky commentary by the president's opposition as well (again, who am I kidding?!)

Do you think the Islamicists would become more active or do you think they would tend to slink away if their failed efforts were broadcast? They certainly get "all up in our face" with their al Jazeera broadcasts. Could we not do something similar? It is obviously a tactic that they feel is important.

Live by the public relations sword; die by the public relations sword. The Islamicists have started the process of "legitimizing" themselves with their new and aggressive al Jazeera "reporting."

We need to exceed their campaign for "hearts and minds" and prove to naysayers that the WOT is "for real" and not a political concoction (for the "broadcast-in-a-barn" people who feel the moon landing was a hoax!).

People need to see the enemy before they believe there is an enemy and we have very short attention spans sometimes; hence, the need to be reminded frequently with a campaign that let's the people know who we are dealing with and shows the radical Islamicists that the PC days are over.

Sorry for the long, opinionated post...it is getting cooler outside (51 degrees!) and I'm starting to feel my "Fall Feistiness!"

Criminy, "Jihad International, Inc." vs. a sleeping lion.

As long as "Jihad International, Inc." is profitable, those with financial interests in the war will work to prolong it.

Okay...how do we break the profitability?

"A person addicted to heroin can get off it if he really tries, but a mujahid cannot leave the jihad. I am spiritually addicted to jihad."

Man o' man....this is a tough nut to crack. Looks like we need a 12-step program for recovering jihadis.

"Enhanced orange" certainly gets one's attention. "Red" might lead to panic and "orange" is just "orange."

But, "enhanced orange" gets the mind to wondering, doesn't it?!

Good morning to you.

You never know what I remember, I don't know either what is in my memory bank.......

The man at the Navy base, there was something about a car and what was in it, but darned if I know what.

If I had to name the base, I get a B.....maybe birmingham?

Don't forget the bombs in the Thames, as I recall, something was published about a year ago, think I have the right name on the river, also think it was nuclear.

Thanks for posting that MnC. I wonder about the language, sounds more like teenyboppers than terrorists except for the akh/ I wonder if akh are initials like I used yours MnC or mine WCG etc. If accurate it makes me even more furious that they are basing out of Mexico. Although, why am I surprised since it's so easy to jump that fence [what fence?].

A neighbor of mine used to work for the park service on the islands/beach area in very south Texas that are next to Mexico. It's very isolated there and very easy to come ashore,[even floating with large plastic containers] coyotes meet them with sand buggies and cars to take them into the country. Of course they need money and the big money is with the OTM's so they get extra special treatment!!
