A Bush Cabinet officer predicted this week that New Orleans likely will never again be a majority black city, and several black officials are outraged. Alphonso R. Jackson, secretary of housing and urban development, during a visit with hurricane victims in Houston, said New Orleans would not reach its pre-Katrina population of "500,000 people for a long time," and "it's not going to be as black as it was for a long time, if ever again."

From what I've read, the Latino population plans on moving to New Orleans, employment opportunities abound for illegal aliens, and cheap labor. Not especially white people.
I realize this is touchy, but that is what I have been reading.

That's a strange article.

I agree, that is why I posted it. For discussion.

Why do we keep playing into the race card?

Why couldn't this guy keep his mouth shut? It was a dumb thing to spout off about. There was exactly NO need for this kind of comment.

The term racist has been very overused. Here in California, I am in the district Mr. Rogan, was my rep. Adam Schiff was my rep, (funded by Clinton), and now Brad Sherman ( whom I never voted for ) is my present rep. It is known as gerrymandering. This is I guess a different form????

Ya I know, but my point is Bush staffers shouldn't be making it so easy for the race-baiters. Thats why we ditched Lott - you'd think they would have learned from that?

Alphonso Jackson is a black conservative who headed the Public Housing Authority for the City of Dallas for several years. He does have a tendency to speak his mind.

Let's face it. The 9th ward was hard hit, and I don't see any logical reason that people steeped in poverty (black OR white) would have a need to return.
People with jobs and mortgages will return for obvious reasons. I'm sure many of the poor have found better living conditions in new, safer locations.

He ought to know that black people are paranoid about the whole issue. They are not in the right state of mind to listen to an accurate prediction of the future that does not include them.

When I read the headline I dreaded what the story would contain. After reading it, it doesn't seem like much of a story at all. New Orleans won't be as big a city as it was (no duh). The poorest residents, a higher percentage of which are black, are the least likely to return (double duh). Hence, the city will be less black.
The fact that this was said by a black cabinet member makes it even less of a potentially "racist" comment.

Both the preacher and the congresswoman suggested that the residents be housed at the closed England Air Force Base at Alexandria, La., to keep them closer to home. Sounds like a great way to create a "super-slum" in no time at all.
First time I have ever heard of "black leaders" suggesting that we deliberately create a ghetto.

They more or less want a concentration camp so their votes (not people, they don't view them as individuals and human beings) don't wander off.
It's just a completely repugnant idea.

Yep, perhaps Bush is just coming straightforwardly out in his Administration that New Orleans will be the first (perhaps second, given Los Angeles today) "United States city of
illegal aliens migrant workers."
Because, seriously, what is HUD going to do, bus in a bunch of white folks? White as in us trailer trash and white trash and rednecks and such Caucasian and Nordic and otherwise Anglo Saxons -- not Hispanic, in all due respect to Hispanics, just saying, most of the illegal aliens migrant workers lately are Hispanic and I'm generalizing for flippant purposes.

"A Bush Cabinet officer predicted this week that New Orleans likely will never again be a majority black city"
The sooner blacks realize that the Democratic Party does not push policies that promote growth, self-sufficiency, and competitiveness, the less likely you will have revelations of parishes with huge concentrations of blacks waiting for their Democrat government to save them. Bill Cosby's speeches on the decay of black youth hit the nail on the head and his so-called own race turned against him. Why? Because it was the truth.
Education, education, education, then find you a job. And that goes for any race. And once you become more successful, you become more conservative.

I understand YOUR interpretation (and, benefit of the doubt here, agree with you), BUT that's not what the guy actually SAID. Perhaps my criticism should be about the obtuse statement itself by someone in a Cabinet position.
