Saudi Prince Buys Large Share of Fox News 16:55 Sep 25, '05 / 21 Elul 5765
(IsraelNN.com) Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal has purchased 5.46 percent of the Fox corporation, according to Gulf Daily News, raising concern that the conservative Fox News may soften its anti-terror stance due to the views of the new shareholder.
Al-Waleed, the nephew of the late Saudi King Fahd, was in the news when he visited the World Trade Center's remains just after the September 11th attacks and offered then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani a $10 million check for relief efforts. Al-Waleed then released a statement blaming US foreign policy and support for Israel for the attacks.
Giuliani returned the prince's check with a statement that, "There is no moral equivalent for this attack. The people who did it lost any right to ask for justification when they slaughtered . . . innocent people ... Not only are those statements wrong, they're part of the problem."
Suppose these Wahhabist bought controlling shares of manufacturers of military equipment?
What makes you think that Saudis don't?
That's not good, is it?
Really? The investor seems kinda brilliant to me. He also owns shares in Time Warner, etc., which makes him a major player in American media and pop culture. There are really only five major media companies -- News Corp, Time Warner, Viacom, Disney and Sony. Between those five, they produce 95% of American pop culture, including movies, music, television programming, books, video games, etc.
So, he looked around and said, "What's America's most profitable export?" Steel? Nope. Cars? Nope. Electronics? Nope.
America exports images, pop culture. Plus, it's one of the few items that you can sell and still keep. That is to say, you can sell the broadcast rights to The Simpsons or Mission Impossible all through Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc. and still maintain control of the copyright.
Same Saudi Prince to whom Rudy returned a 10 million dollar check.
Depends on who you are talking about. Princes Sultan and Nayef would give me...pause.
Al-Foxeera? God I hope not! I'd hate to see Lauren Green or Molly Henneberg in a burqa......or Brigette Quinn, E.D. Hill, Juliet Huddy, Brenda Buttner, Dari Alexander....(see a pattern forming?)
Fox has Jump the Shark already.
When Ed Hill starts running down the Israelis and saying the Palesites have a legitimate beef, i'll start to wonder.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
On the other hand...a ghutrah would solve his bad rug problem.
Thanks for the ping!
Ahem...ping.
I read this a few days ago and was not very happy about it. Then a freeper linked me to an article by the Prince in question who said he supported Murdock and his policies and that Murdock is trying to stave off a hostile takeover and needed the $$.
Murdock needs cash to avoid a hostile takeover?? Hmmm...
How would you like to be beholden to a Saudi royal? Not me.
I wouldn't keep that cash either, prairie. My guess is that the Prince was just talking nice in the article I read so he'd get his foot in the door and not have the $$ returned ala Guiliani.
There goes the show "24", imo. They've hardly been able to bring themselves to show terrorists as Middle Easterners anyway, and now with this guy having a voting bloc, we can forget it.
Now the conspiracy nuts will be out tinfoil-hatting about Bush's connections with the Saudis!
