Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Houston TV now saying that the AP story about the electric pole was inaccurate, because Galvez power company called in and said there was no juice flowing, so it couldn't have started the fire.

They're also trying to track down the rumor that a woman was injured in this fire--and wondering why anyone would've been there.

OK, of the three structures that burned (an hour ago), one was a house, one was that FOE lodge and they are across the street from each other, not next door. Third building unknown at this time.

would be a nice tribute if every city in the U.S. had a small WTC steel as a reminder

We have a museum in our town. If you would like to see the info on it, look up Pelco on the net. Then on the right side of their website you will see a 9-11 memorial link. Our BSA troop is the scout group in the pictures.

Is that the code to start the revolution?

No, that would be "The wind is in the buffalo".

Hundreds of square miles of shoreline might be flatened by tomorrow morning, and Tucker is lamenting the loss of these few buildings by fire. Oh the humanity!!!

smell....

I still thinks it's just the muck in the bay getting churned up. I'm also seeming to recall that smells are more pronounced in low preasures?

we have had this conversation before. My husband says to tell you that his mother made her own sauerkraut and canned it but he doesn't know what the Koreans treat the cabbage with before they put it in a crock and bury it in the ground but he swears that after a person eats it, the smell hangs in the air and that person must sweat it out though their pores. They hired a young Korean man to keep their quarters clean and they barred him from entering the barracks if he had eaten kimchi because the smell made them all sick. LOL

We were talking about blank-o.

My favorite was when somebody on here referred to has as "Blanco Dubois."

My cat has been staying away from the windows since about 9pm, which is a bit unusual for him. I first noticed the smell when I went outside at about 9:40.

Whatever is being carried on the wind is not pleasant.

I googled and found this link to the ghost face. Apparently it's too big for my slooow dial up to load so don't know if it's a good picture or not. Google and see if you can find something.

I didn't believe Mr. M. Late at night, park at the HEB grocery, cross the street and sneak around the chainlink fence, hold your nose and step very carefully down the dock to the back of the building. Can't miss him. The face is huge.

I>The police in Dallas questioned the driver of the bus that burned and killed so many elderly people this morning... He doesn't even have a US driver's license...just a MEXICAN license...

THIS FACT will be deleted faster than the Able Danger database.

First, Happy Birthday (it is the 24th in my time zone)...

Good night, and get some rest (sometime) -- someone else can always give you a breather... Daylight should shed more light on this storm (no pun intended).

And G-dspeed to everyone else...

I don't really understand it, but suddenly, once a year or so, all the water that was on the bottom of a lake will come to the top and the water on top go to the bottom. The water coming to the top drags up lots of half rotted nasties that don't smell so good. It's called turning over. I don't think all lakes do it, I've only seen it once at lake Marble Falls, where I think it happens every year, from what the locals told me.
