Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

I don't feel obligated to read every thread. I'd have no time for anything else if I tried!

I don't think there is one person in this country that wants "help" from Blanco.

I posted what I heard and didn't editorialize...

I also said that I heard he saved some of the passengers...

but I am the one that originally posted it...but NOT to bash his ethnicity...

However, the bus lines, GLOBE...I think, is also supposedly in trouble from past problems...and maybe on of them is hiring people that maybe cannot communicate well enough---that when told a brake needs to be fixed...he doesn't understand well enough and doesn't fix it...

Just stuff that the Dallas PD...are questioning tonight..

I report ya'll decide.

Eh, I don't think there's a sulfur component to it. I know what that smells like, and that's not present.

A LOT of forecasts went bust on this one, so don't take it personal. The NHC sure isn't :-)

Then looks directly INTO the camera and says NOTHING.

At first I thought is was the folks down the street barbecuing goats & hogs. More like a compost heap that got too wet.

We were supposed to visit Sunbury, PA the day after the storm came through. Sunbury is the only town along the Susquehanna which didn't flood, because it had a rather large flood wall. They also had the world's largest Fabricated Dam, but the hurricane wiped out the million-dollar marina they had installed above it.

Needless to say, we didn't go, because the city was closed (flood gates shut).

Trivia: They were debating pulling down the walls, because they people along the river thought they were ugly, and they hadn't had flood since they started building it.

"It's like a combination of rotting vegetation, stagnant water, and rotting meat."

Sounds to me like the water is so rough that it's churning up 30 years worth of gunk from the bottom of the bay. And seeing as smell is the most provoking on the memory cells - you'll be ahead of the game the NEXT time you're in a hurricane!
