Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

What happened to the folks who got stuck on freeways leaving town? Did they have to ride it out in their cars?
I have family from the Woodville area. My grandparents lived there. (They are passed away now.) I'm distantly related to lots of people in the area, the Barclays.
If you have any information about Woodville, I'd appreciate it.
I'll say a prayer for your parents.
I was just thinking about that; I have a HUGE list I complied with Freeper nicks.
Should I just ping them all to the bottom of the sign in thread?
Or should I post a new thread so they can check in AND tell their storm stories?
What do you think?
Woodville Texas mayor said their police department roof blown off. The town was pre-evacuated. Mayor is still stationed in town.
Y'all might really enjoy this ~
At dinner last night we met a couple from New Orleans who were evac'ed to Houston because of Katrina and then to Dallas because of Rita. The wife was at work at Charity Hospital when the flooding hit - the husband had tried to get to her but the flooding made it impossible. He went to the Superdome and decided he wanted no part that and decided to try to make it their home. They have two teenage daughters and was worried about them. He ended up in water up to his neck and was pulled to safety by someone in a boat.
His wife was in the group that got rescued by boats, bussed to the airport and flown out to Houston. He got bussed to Houston.
He said they were able to keep in contact with one another via cell phones and all of them, including their daughters plus the wife's elderly mother, were able to finally reunite in Houston. But their home and every thing they owned was completely destroyed....... their home was flooded to the roof top.
The wife had a small handful of family photos in her purse that she always carries to show friends and these few pictures are all she has left. As I looked thru her photos I could lots and lots of family photos in frames on the walls in the background and I could tell that, like me, this woman loved to have pictures of her loved ones all around! My heart just ached for her.
We asked if there was anything we could do to help them and they said they were doing okay, especially since they had all been able to reunite and were all together. The only thing they said really needed was to be able to get down to Reunion Arena here in Dallas to get registered with the Red Cross. So my husband took the husband down there first thing this morning to see if they can get that done.
He just called to say they told the man that no one can help him till Monday. *sigh*
Okay, now that you have that part of the story here is the really enjoyable part - the story of how we encounter these folks from NOLA ~ we were dining in a small semi-private room off the main dining room in a local restaurant (we being my husband, my 95 year old father-in-law, our 94 year old aunt hubby had rescued from Galveston in a 26 hour exodus and my sister-in-law...who tends to be a liberal, but not a foaming at the mouth, rabid one, so tolerable). There were maybe 6 tables in this room total.
In the course of chatting over coffee after dinner someone at our table mentioned had tiresome the news media was and I sort of snapped. I launched into a mini tirade about the MSM which I finished off with a rave about how dishonest the media had been in their coverage New Orleans, just making it up as they went along and how the stupidity of the nagin and the Blanco placed the citizens of LA at risk.
This sort of out burst is a bit out of character for me, but I was I've been steaming about this and I guess I just needed to let it out. When I realized how angry I was and how I had actual raised my voice as I was venting, I immediately felt embarrassed - the room had gone dead quiet - "aw geez", I thought. "Nice going."
As I sheepishly glanced up from our table and looked across the room I saw a man who had turned his chair complete around to look at me as I was speaking. This man was vigorously nodding his head up and down and when he saw that he'd caught my eye he loudly said, "You are soooo right!!! You are absolutely right! We were there and you are soooo right!"
With that the room became like a "family dining room" with one conversation going on amongst everyone there - it was so incredible.
Exactly...shoot, we're not quite through with the storm surge coming in.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Those wanting to preach their sermon's to all the Godless people who suffered can go get a room and face each other for their hypocrisy.
The eye wasnt very defined at landfall was it?
So La got the majority of the storm surge?
Hope. Eye went (or maybe is going - I haven't checked lately) over Jasper, and the storm, while strong, isn't as strong as it came in.
Yep, I still head out to sit on the patio whenever it rains. Used to have a dog who would sit beside me and bark every time he would hear thunder. Used to get real cockey when the storm (and thunder) started moving away :o)
A great political commercial in the offing.
Who would you rather have making hurricane preparations in New Orleans.
or
Local news, only 16 arrested in Houston. (typical night)
On another note, how pitiful and pathetic that the leader of the greatest country on earth is asked another vicious and STOOOOPID question, to which he humbly replies, "There will be no risk of me getting in the way, I promise you," Bush said.
Thought this might be appropriate for the next time the MSM break their necks to ask the most hateful question:
LOL
But I wonder how much damage the storm surge did in areas along the Louisiana coast, in places such as Cameron. Waveland redux?
I just turned it off:) I fell asleep with the TV on last night, just about the time the eye wall was making landfall. Woke up this morning, listened to 10 minutes of Fox. I was wondering if Geraldo and Shep are still thinking storm chasing is a great way to spend time. But I pretty quickly got annoyed with Greg Kellyl I usually don't mind him but today he was babbling on about how "reporters thought" Bush was overdoing Rita because despite getting briefings he was "on vacation and playing guitar" during Katrina. So I turned to TWC for 10 minutes listened through one round of lets get caught up in Galviston, Sulphur, etc then decided I'd hit the TV wall - time for a little silence.
My cynical son is telling me that owners of SUV's get tax breaks ... do you know if that's true?
Post a new thread. Ping me and I'll help you keep it bumped until they all sign in. Can you post their nicks in the face of the thread so we can keep track of when they sign in?
