Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Seriously? I thought we had the most rainfall in the country..
I am so glad he is a Democrat. The talking heads and screaming Congress can take note that a Democratic Mayor and Republic Governor worked well together as opposed to the NO disaster.
The electric company and I are fighting right now. My electric bill jumped thirty dollars over last years bill. There is a problem on their part as their is nothing wrong with the AC or the hot water heater. They say it's my fault and not theirs and I say just the opposite.

My mom and dad live in Woodville, just west of Jasper. They are in their 80's and with the phone lines down, we can't get in touch with them. Does anyone have any contact with someone in that area to access damage or conditions? I understand that around 7:00 a.m. the winds were around 100 mph and I am really worried.
Mobile, AL gets twice as much rain/year as Seattle.
New York City has more yearly precipitation than Seattle does.
One of the great weather myths is that Seattle has really unusually large quantities of rain.
Because that area is close to sea level, the storm didn't actually hit land until it reached Port Arthur TEXAS.

My SIL's house is in that area - they evacuated to San Antonio.
Good to here their place is (probably!) OK, if your's came through all right.

Um, maybe he did leave once the mandatory evacuation call went out. But damn him for making sure his place was secure and outside objects put away.

Smart people. My cousin told his wife yesterday their will be NO gas fires in the fire place this year. He's retired now so she can't even sneak one in when he's not there.
Nita Nupress is in Kountze just south of Woodville she said lots of trees down she was on battery so she wont be on much. Check her latest posts. I'll look too just a sec.
It just rains more often in Seattle. Much, much more often. I was there once. It rained/misted for three straight days.
You may have the most days with rain. Mobile and Miami have the most rain because of heavier rainfall. Here in Huntsville we average about 54".
